Who be Blue?

“Blue” is Brock Patterson the owner of Blue Ribbon Construction in Wichita, Kansas. An independent and capable guy, Brock has tried his hand at a few things to finally end up being a General Contractor and a Remodel Crazy member, here’s a little about “Blue”.

Brock went to college on a football scholarship to quickly find out that the life of an academic wasn’t his life, so he left school and with a friend became a bouncer at a club near where he lived. While laying around the pool one fine afternoon his friends and he were approached by a man who asked how they could afford to hang out during the day when everyone else was at work, Brock explained they were bouncers at night. That conversation led to a job offer that Brock accepted, doing construction work for a company doing Kmart build outs. That lasted 8 years and we all know what happened to Kmart.

In 1991 Brock moved to Wichita, Kansas and built a deck for his mother, soon after the deck was built Wichita was hit with a damaging hailstorm and Brock found himself in the roofing business, when that ran out he went into contracting, teaching himself and learning as he went. He also found love there and built a family, The Patterson’s include Brock, his wife Charlotte and the boys, Chaz and Beau, who look just like Brock, unfortunately.

I asked Brock some questions:

What do you like about the construction business?

I like the people best, the other contractors and generally everyone involved in the business. I also like the change, different jobs at new locations so your not going back to the same place for years on end, I also like working for different people, most of my customers are nice.

What don’t you like about the business?

The people, the ones who try to get free things or try to short you after the job is done.

What do you think will change in the future?

I don’t think the business will change that much, craft and pride will still be important. In Wichita remodeling is still hot and people are interested in getting things done, I haven’t seen much change.

What would you do if you didn’t have to work?

If I could do anything I would live in a warm climate and play golf everyday.
