Saw a regular last night. She's in need of a handicap bathroom for her brother..

Bath is 6x10,

Shower to be aprox.6x3 1/2.

curbless is ideal,Frame house, open basement below.

Price is important. I think dropping floor in shower area 4 inches and doing a mud base will be the best. Waterproof joining floor with additional drain for good luck .

Customer asked about fiberglass base to save cost. Brother is a mess--could not cope with any curb IMO.

Any ideas ? She wants to put a bid on this house right away.

Hope you guys are awake.THANKS---MIKE

There are curb less bases that work in most situations.
Options are assist type or not. I have some information in a file so give me some time and I will post later today so you might be able to offer options.

Will it save you time and money? Maybe!

If you go curbless. Water proof the entire bathroom. Install 2 drains one in the shower area and one in the bathroom floor outside the shower.

Use kerdi/ditra and bring it up the walls 2' outside the shower and up to the walls in the shower area.

Think of it like making the entire bathroom a shower pan with two drains in the room.

I prefer doing a pan or molded base in the shower area myself. The last one I did I used a Kohler shower system with built in seat and installed grab bars through out the bathroom as needed.

Wall hung sink, grab rails --the whole works.

The house was occupied last night-Wishing I could have taken pictures.
It's so easy to forget details. It was dinner time and the homeowners looked kind of grumpy,Would have liked to blue print the whole house.

Thank a bunch everyone --got to go collect some bills, hustle up more work.

I don't need to tell you this.Life these days.--MIKE

Dropping the floor & mud base is generally expensive, I would probably go for the full Shluter system using the 6' x 6' system - then you just have to fir up the last 4' feet & use Ditra there

Mike,

With cost being an issue--take a look at Tile-Redi's pans:

http://www.tileredi.com/products_files/barrier-free.php

If I needed to keep the cost down, that's probably the direction I would go. It would still be a good idea to waterproof the surrounding floor--but I've seen these pans up close and they look like a great system.

She dropped her teeth when I told her what it will cost to lower flood joists and add a beam. To bad--I do love ripping a house apart and putting it back together!!!

swanstone has several options for wheelchair access and the pan doesn't need to get tiled.

There are others, I use one that is just a big bulb (think overgrown weatherstripping). I get it local though.

I used one of the Sterling "vikerel" once.
I like it better than fiber glass.
