Looking to purchase a new Vac for clean up. ainly goign to use it for residential work and cleaning up at the end of the day. being a paint contractor will be mostly drywall dust from patching so filters and dust control is a must. we do a lot of patch work on older type homes and the owner are living in there still and want to get that dust down.
Also noise I would like one that allows me to think while vacuuming :)
Weight would be a concern as well since sometime it may be bought in and out of a jobs daily on residential re-paints.
Thanks for any advice.

Depending on your budget there are a number of good choices.
The fein and Wap are pretty good, durable but expensive. Also probably the quietest out there.
The Porter Cable vac designed to go with the drywall sander is very good and if I remember correctly either does or can have a HEPA filter added.
Depending on the model most of the above you can plug a sander or whatever into it and the vac will start automatically when you turn on the other machine
Last choice would be a Ridgid
General purpose vac should last about 100 hours or so, noisy, but not overly noisey.

fein is what I have been researching, ridgid is what I have now.

I have all rigid vacs and while they are on the loud side, I've got no complaints about their longevity.
Have you considered the new lead based paint safe practices regs? I need to buy another vac soon but I'm holding off until I go through the training to make sure the new one fits the bill.

no I have not thought of that. I don't deal with many lead paint issues anymore. even in older interiors sanding patches usually over multiple layers and latex non lead paint.
I do like my rigid but noise, age and I don't think its the best for dust control.

Drywall dust is the hardest thing on a vac besides concrete dust.
That said, I use my Festool CT-22 for most of my clean-ups in a house. If possible I sweep up a pile and throw it away first, then get the left overs with the CT.
As far as dry wall dust and the left overs of a painting patch, it is perfect for that.
They make a powered carpet brush that works awesome (quite a few people use their CT's to vaccum their house).
Best part, when the bag is full take it out cap it and throw away. About 6 bucks a pop perbag.
Here you go:
http://www.mcfeelys.com/product/583366/Festool-CT-22-E-HEPA-Dust-Extractor--53-gal
This shows you the differences between all their Vacs.
I am looking to add another one of their vac's to dedicate to my Kapex.
These are better than the Fein just for the portability stand point.

I have a fein and a ridgid. I would never in a million years use my fein on drywall dust.
I keep the ridgid around to use on random junk, especially drywall dust. I've had it for 1.5 years so far and still works fine. It's louder than my fein but you can by a "muffler" for it, and if you keep it cleaned out it doesn't get as loud.
I mostly use my fein for tool dust collection, sawdust, wood shavings, clean-up in finished homes, etc.
I think most vacs void their warranty if you use it on drywall dust.

The Porter-Cable with the sander
has a HEPA filter.
It's the nuts!
That sander is as close to zero dust
as I expect to see in this life.
Not to mention easy on the shoulders.

They can also be used as a clean air filter.
Their vac's are designed for constant running, or constant on/off cycles.
Dry wall dust will not void a warranty from Festool.
They are trying to get a vac out aimed specifically at drywall dust with automatic pulsating filter cleaners.
Plugged filters is what ruins a vac.

I am sorry but, I hate that vac. It's huge and loud.
I have the PC drywall sander, it does a good job but just wait.
I have played with this and it will obsolete the PC when it is released.

Mak, Scott (VermontPainter) just wrote an article in American Painting Contractor (http://www.paintmag.com/).
It is not online yet, but I'll scan it if you want. He reviewed the Feins, they sound great!
We use the rigids, and work them hard on NC, usually last 2 years, but have to replace the crevice tool because it gets worn down.

I read it all ready Chris, thanks. I talked to Scott for his opinion I am surprised tho that the Festool wasn't consider by him as by what little research I have done the Festool seems like a better vac then Fein

I am on my second PC drywall sander and the vac for the first one resides somewhere in my friends shop. We had more problems with it than it was worth. Before I got a CT I used a ridgid vac with the bags for the PC sander.
I just didn't think that vac was well put together, at least not as well as the sander.
The fein's are nice, they are shaped in a way that makes them easier to tip than a CT. Plus, I like the flat storage on top of the CT.
I have used and abused that CT-22 for almost 2 years. The only thing that happened is one of the brakes for the back wheels broke. I called Festool on a thursday morning and had the new part friday afternoon.
That will always keep me happy.
Does the Fein come with a cleaning kit, ie nozzels and such?

Pretty close. It should be under 2k for the whole set-up, when released to the US.
Their sander is modular though, meaning you can use the section with the sanding head and hook it up to the vac.
Gives you the advantage of being able to sand hallways and small rooms with it.
It also has vac controls on the sander and it will literally hold itself to the ceiling.
They don't make anything cheap, they have no interest in competing on price with anyone else.
If I remember right, the whole set-up from PC was like 1800 bucks when it first came out.

All about the sucking!!
In all seriousness, my dust extractor/vac, is the center of the tools I use.
Everything hooks up to it.
Ever cut a whole bunch of Miratec or Azek and see the giant pile of filth you left behind?

I use the 16gal Shop-vac from Lowes. It has done me good for a few years now. I use a bag as most everything I use it for is sheetrock dust and trim shavings. The fine partical filter for $30 is a must have.
You would not believe the difference it makes using the fine filter and the bag, i never blow dust back out.
