Started a new job today and the additional work requests have started already. We've added some additional crown molding and misc. carpentry already. This one however is new to me.

Situation: Second floor cantilevered off the first, soffit not installed yet, approx. 1" spray foam insulation on under side of subfloor over the cantilever.

Request: Fill cavity with FG insulation and install cement board soffit.

Can I tell by looking weather it's closed cell or open cell foam?
Is this an appropriate place for fiberglass either way?

TIA

And a side note; The wife has given me the OK to publish her Apple Crisp recipe. (Getting her to write it down may inspire another essay)

Good Luck
Dave

Press on it - closed cell is hard to compress - open cell compacts easy & will not spring back

Second part - sure it will add more R-Value, one of the tricks for skirting around the higher cost is what is called a splash n' dash - spray a layer of closed cell foam & then finish it off with open cell (some do it with Fiberglass, etc...)

If it is something you are doing yourself and don't want to bring a 'foam rig' in with a minimum charge, call ABC Supply or the like in your area and inquire about their foam packs. DOW makes a two part system with two canisters, hoses, and the wand that will mix to the proper proportions without you doing anything but pulling the trigger. We use them for repairs to all the foam roofs we see around here that fail continuously. Great idea for insulation, horrible roof system. I believe they run around $400.00
