Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor Law Now in Effect

By:Lauren Hunter

In an effort to thwart dishonest contractors and their fraudulent actions, Pennsylvania has enacted the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act. In effect as of July 1, 2009, the Act requires all contractors who perform $5,000 or more in home improvements annually to register with the Attorney General’s office. Registered contractors must carry at least $50,000 of personal injury liability coverage and $50,000 of property damage coverage.

The registration costs just $51, but some remodelers are finding the new law also costs a lot of time and effort.

$50,000 insurance. That is peanuts and I would be afraid to have so little. I carry 1 million and sometimes I need another 1 million rider.

I have actualaly only needed my insurance once in my life. And it wasn't my fault. Had a guy working for me and he leaned a ladder on my truck. The owners Mom and Dad came by the site and parked in the driveway next to my truck. The ladder got blown off my truck and put a nice dent in their new black Cadillac. Ugh. They paid it no problem, I didn't get a raise in my preimiums. They are so ahead of me moneywise. It's like throwing money into a big hole only to have a few bills float to the surface every couple of years.
