Not exactly a 'work' project.
But it's what I've been working on for the last week or so while I wait for the permit for my next job to come through.
Picked it up for nothing, couple days' work getting new tires and lights.
Brought it home for new wood and paint.
Hopefully will be a useful addition to make me a bit more efficient.

Has a very nice grain, Maple is much more subdued. Both are very blotchy to stain. You need to do a bunch to make it the color come out smooth and even.

here is a few before and afters of a small basement clean up really. Nothing really had been done since the late 60's early 70's. We basically primed and painted, new floor, new baseboards and shoe, some other minor carpentry, switch out lights. The lady was in her 70's and was very happy. She has new furniture coming from Ethan Allen in a few week will go back to take more pics when the designed stages the room with all new stuff.

We use WB Siloxane by Prosoco and a sureflo pump/200' hose and spray wand to apply. A lift sure would have been nice except we were on the gymnasium roof. We couldn't even use rolling scaffold.

Are you telling us the cnc read the printed photo and copied it onto the wood? Have they come this far with the technology on the CNC?

Although the technology exists, I'm not there yet. i'm still about $1999.00short.
The printed clockface is the numbers,
the carving is a program I bought from a company that supplies just about anything you want. Vectric.com.
They have a TON of cool stuff. Their Aspire program will allow you to carve a scanned photo with some addl. editing. their PhotoVcarve will do it also.

This was my reaction too!! I remember a job just like that one. They used an old box springs matress as the steel for the porch floor and the concrete was about 12 inches thick. it was like breaking out of Alcatraz. Each spring of that bax spring would hold on to the concrete and just wiggle under the jackhammer.....Total BS

Most of your albums I get the sense that you really enjoy what your doing. You do pull off some interesting jobs by yourself.

Code says a landing that small and low doesn't require footings. I tend to agree.
It is also easily removed in the event of future changes for a wheelchair.
And you are right, I do really enjoy what I do. Doing it alone makes for some sore muscles some days tho.

here is a few before and afters of a small basement clean up really.

Customer gave me a crude drawing of an IKEA-type desk, wanted me to build it to fit his tiny office.
I started back in the summer sometime, and it got put on the back burner for awhile...
Had a slow day today, so finally got it assembled. My shop is tiny, so it'll be nice to get this thing outta there.
It's way too Blah for my tastes, but the customer is into the sleek modern look.

Can't wait to see the interior of that one Scott!
Here is the view from our last one.
The interior is not nearly as interesting as some of our previous nc's. Unfortunately, alot of the walls are grasspaper, and its not a trim heavy house. But it is rather large and has some not so painter friendly challenges that make it labor intensive nonetheless. There is a significant staining component on several exotic wood species on cabinets, case, base and doors.
Holy cow thats one amazing view! Was that a nc too? Is it on your site?

Started demo on a bathroom gut late this week.
The bathroom had apparently been remodeled before at least once but I can't quite make sense of the chronology of what happened here.

I know, I know...I'm just paranoid for insisting on waterproofing my shower walls behind the tile. :rolleyes3:
Incidentally the tile on that exterior wall was glazed porcelain 4x4 and the tile and grout were in good shape:

Don't forget to reboot that vent pipe. Looks like they were getting a good soaking every time it rained. More than likely you were getting a steady back stream at the shower head arm connection inside the wall. Thats the connection that causes more trouble than anything

Demo was done during snow and just after rain and melting; the plaster was dry behind the vent so I'm guessing it was an old boot problem corrected in a re-roof. Of course I'll verify that.

They were gracious enough to leave one in the middle! Luckily there is no roof weight on the wall, just ceiling. When I'm done with it it'll be close to 16" oc again.

I just bid it to do a level 5 finish if I can't talk them in to knockdown. I, as you know, am self taught so I may do it the hard way.
I get it off as slow and good as possible then prime it before any mud. Anything that shows a bubble I cut it out then mud every square inch, sand it, then reprime it. Check it with spotlight then paint.

The way I do it too Blue. Really the only way to do it. But I fugged up hard on this one. Young couple, and I didn't realize what '
a.) that there was backing paper on the wall also
b.) that the walls were total crap and that is why there was backing paper on it..
c.) the trim was not prepped and painted right, the wall paper solution that I use to take the glue off.. bubbled the Behr paint that was used for the trim.
It just kept getting worse till I finally got it primed.. then it all came together :2thumbsup:

Little 24 x 24 dettached. These things are nice little money makers. Before you ask the reason for zero overhang was because of a tight side setback and tough to swing the vehicles in if we were to moveit over anymore.

I love me a good garage build. Especially the ones that are only garages until the final inspection. Then we locate the little wire in the slab that tells us where the drain is for the shower and plumb that all up real nice, and we re-frame the interior walls to make a nice bathroom suite, knock in a couple of french doors where the roll-up was, and Voila! Freakin' guest house y'all.
Nice little moneymakers those garages. And easy to build.

i just use aquamix grout release (http://www.custombuildingproducts.com/ProductCatalog/aquamixproducts/aquamix_problemsolvers/GroutRelease.aspx?user=pro&lang=en). wipe it on, let it dry then grout. grout cleans off pretty easy (as easy as it can for slate... anyway)

Those Saltillos are pretty popular in CA. I've done a few kitchens with them. Always seemed to surprise a bit here and there.
I wish I was better at tile, I just haven't done enough of it. I'm still at that stage where I keep thinking as I'm doing it that when I get to the boundaries, I'm going to find out where I made my layout mistake. Nerve racking.

Worked on this today.... The pencils and the leafy listello are considerably thicker than the wall tile. I had to carve, shape, profile, and curse at these pieces so the escutcheon plate would sit flush against the wall tile.
It's a Kerdi shower with the membrane sealed tight to the shower valve, so Im not concerned with any water that may make it back there. 13x13's below the lower deco band, and 10x16's above it.

July 11th, 2010, 10:29 AM
Was this HO's design, or yours?
Why wasn't the band between
the controls?
Not a criticism, just a question.
Blue
July 11th, 2010, 10:35 AM
Good work. But I just want to know what those controls do. I got the shower head and mixing valve, but what are the other two? I should have been born 50 years earlier.
Splinter
July 11th, 2010, 10:57 AM
Homeowners design, not mine... It was a bit of a compromise. The two different tile sizes, extra tall vanity, double deco bands, huge flush mounted medicine cabinet, window, and cast iron and galvanized plumbing in the wall all had to be taken into consideration during valve placement and tile layout.
Blue, the big valve has two handles, one for temp, and another for volume control. The small one above is a diverter to switch between showerhead and handheld, and the spout along side the big mixing valve is the outlet for the handheld. The white plastic is just a temporary cap included to aid installation.

I fixed the floor joists, fixed the wall that was just hanging there, installed new ply, installed my Ditra and then they proceeded to tile it and make it look like my 4 year old did it.:smash:
Five days worth of work to have a good floor system and a nice flat surface to tile and they made it look like a blind man tiled it.

Working on a house with limited access. Couldn't get a ladder in one corner, so I went up and over.

They're rocks, but I never think about it. LIke glass or sheetrock, they can be dropped on edge, not flat. I handle the ladders like I do trim boards, etc. Firmly, but gently. Let them loose and the hooks hit hard, things will break.
Looks like the stuff is still pretty thick.
??? Slate can be 1/4" to 2" thick. They don't seem to thin with age. This roof dates from 1935. These are around 3/8" thick, 7" x 14".
