I am not ready to jump on this bandwagon yet! Some of the reviews i have read have been less than stellar. As it gains popularity, we will see?
It seems to be great for groups that work together. Some say the forum/chat/email is too scattered and distracting.

it is basically an instant message, and all your people are connected if you want them to be on the list of "cool people who can be on the list" and so they can have open discussion about things, instead of the clunky foward that regular email operates on. There is features from things like flicker or photobucket to other shit I have no idea what it is... but the thing is it is more like a forum thread or Instant message, actually more like a thread than anything in the form of an instant message.

Randy Austin sent this to me today about the Google Wave - figured I ought to pass it on:
Jesse,
Thanks, I read through the post and thought basecamp was interesting however… this week I was lucky enough to get a special invite from Google to try out Google Wave, and this my friend, will change everything, and will make Basecamp look armature.
It will take some time to get the kinks worked out and for people to learn the new technology, but a year from now we will have all forgotten about Email, Chat and other methods of sharing data. This really looks like a game-changer. Oh yeah, and it’s free.
Have you heard much about Wave yet?
Have a Great day,
Randy

Just as Jesse posted, i have been 'on the Wave' for the past few days and I love it. Google Wave has the potential to change the way we think about chat, email, photo and document sharing. With it's real-time chat you can see your co-workers and friends as they type, and you are able to respond even before they are finished.
Email was based on the old send and wait for receipt system, and Wave is a real-time collaborative hosting application that promises to be future of web communication. Google has also opened up Wave to other developers to let them develop applications within the Wave, just as Apple did with the IPhone. While it is still very early, and the testing is a bit rocky, if you get a chance to get an invite, take a look and give it a try. (If you just can't wait for a full public release you can 'buy' invites on Ebay for a few bucks.
Here is a sample of a Wave:
Happy Surfing,

Amazing time to be in the contracting business recession or not. Just think how far ahead of the curve we already are and will be - it is incredible.
Contractors and lumberyards around here are still in the dark ages don't have a clue of what they are missing by not using the internet and coming to these forums. I try to share the knowledge with them but they just don't get it. What was good enough for Grandad is good enough for them.

maybe a little off topic...but the pic looks good on my end, any smaller and I couldn't read the print...and I'm only on 19" monitors (yeah the "square" ones).
I've had a dual screen set-up for about 4 years and really haven't seen a need to upgrade....I don't watch movies on the computer, so what the hell. The only downside is that probably most new sites are geared toward wide-screen monitors...ya got me.
(oh, maybe the pic was already re-sized, my bad :smash:)

I believe prior to 2008, "What was good enough for Grandad WAS good enough for them.", however as we enter 2010 clearly those business owners who still operate under that philosophy will find themselves at the short end of the stick. The fact is that were are clearly in a period of 'survival of the fittest' which cannot be argued. Now that does not mean that every contractor who does not jump on the latest technological 'wave' will get left behind, but what it does mean is that only those contractors with model efficiency and systems who are able to turn profits in the leanest times will not. Using these advance tools such as Wave, Social Networking, Blogs & Forums, Basecamp etc. are simply tools that help do our jobs better every day.
The fact is that we can no longer afford to hire a person to fill ever job that we have, so if using technology can help cut our overhead, while improving your systems and your overall customer service, than you might just be on the winning end of Darwin's theory.

How will google wave help me as a contractor?? I am the most tech savvy contractor I know and i have not figured that one out..
Great Question, let me see if I can offer some possible scenarios
Customers - In an earlier post users were discussing www.basecamphq.com as a means of communicating with your customer. This was in response to this post:
"With what frequency should you maintain contact with a client before during and after a project?
Do you ask your client how frequently to contact them?
Do you ask them what their preferred method of contact is?
Has anyone tried having a dry erase project board at the site for last minute notes to be passed both ways? Does that sound too impersonal?
If you don't see them a spiral notebook left on the job is invaluable. Better than a dry erase board as you have a record of all the communications back and forth.
With the assumption that your Customer's are on Wave as well, you then have the ability to communicate with them in a real-time situation, providing them with up-to-the-minute project status, photos, designs, chat, and even a video meeting with the customer if they choose. What makes it special is it's ability to keep track of every detail, and 'playback' the events as they happen on a wave. Customers who want to know their current project status will simply check the wave via their phone or PC at a time that is convenient for them, without the need of the dinner time, or early morning phone calls.
Vendors- -Clear and concise communicating with vendors in the contracting business is a top priority for all Contractors. Google Wave can be a great conduit for that communication. As a contractor you can send Purchase Orders directly over Wave in any type of form (pdf, Word, Excel, etc) and you can also include specific drawings, pictures and specifications as well, cutting down on costly errors and improper orders. Vendors can respond in real-time their in-stock prices and availability as well as P/U and delivery information. Wave's ability to Tag and Sort gives contractors a clean way of tracking Jobs, PO's, and Statuses simply by using proper tag's.
Employees- While on the Jobsite, using any web-enabled phone or laptop, you have the ability to communicate and send up-to-the-minute job information to and from your fields technicians. We all know the importance of this so I will not go into detail. Employees can receive any type of Job Information, mapping, directions, parts lists, etc from you in the office, while they can send you real-time Job Status, pictures, and job issues. Wave's ability to 'cut & paste' offers you the ability to take pictures, information and drawings from your 'Employees wave' and paste them directly into your 'Customers Wave' and it can be done in just a couple of seconds. Now that's great customer service.
These are just a few of the ideas how Google Wave can help out contractors. Think of Wave as a brand new type of foundation, in which a new type of house can be built, better than any type of house we have seen before. It will take some time before we see Wave as mainstream, but the concept will clearly take a hold in one form or another, and perhaps we will not look at email the same way before. And the best part, it's all FREE.
Also, Wave works well on Mozilla Firefox, and best on Chrome. IE does not have the advanced HTML to render Wave properly. (if you are still using IE, you probably don't care much about Wave anyway)
P.S. I am not affiliated with Google or Wave in any way, I am just one of the many thousands of people who are testing a beta version.

I'm tempted, but it sounds like a "wiki".
And I'm not sure how we can make such a system useful.
I can understand how a team working on a goal could find this exceptionally advantageous - like students in one class, house wives writing a cook book, a sports team, or programers writing a new app.
How would this be used for our advantage? Business forms are my first thought. If we were a design team, then right on.
open my mind and eyes, please

It's very early in the development and I'm sure more opportunities will be more transparent as it matures.
This is pretty much correct. I currently see it most useful for multiple working on the same project or goal. You could characterize it as a journal with real time capabilities (and replay), document sharing, collaboration and editing capabilities and communication. Basicly a one stop shop to keep in the loop on an ongoing project.
Interesting side-note: Business's are able to run their own Wave server. This will surely spark some unique and creative uses that most of us can not realize at this time.

We are using Gmail for our call logs and can see the wave taking that over pretty quick.
Right now every phone call in or out of the office is currently logged into Gmail and sent to the big 3 with the date/time and what the conversation consisted of. We can then search by date, email address, keywords etc. The wave will do nicely for this.
Cant wait to see what other people come up with!
