Is anyone else using a wood pellet stove? We just got ours running a few weeks ago and so far it's been a disappointment.

The manufacturer says this will run for a few days on 1 bag of pellets. So far, the best I can get out of it is one day. I've had to play with the controls a lot to get it to run that long!

Any tips?

Actually, it's filthier than my wood stove so far! I get soot all over my hands every time I need to open the door! The glass gets covered in it!

The whole reason I bought it was because I THOUGHT I could fill it up and leave the house for a few days in the winter. I'm not seeing that happening so far.

Do they have types of wood pellets? Like spf or hardwoods?

It's this one: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200394625_200394625

I bought it last year and just got it hooked up. I really don't think it's got much to do with the brand. Other people I talked to are not too thrilled with them either.

I noticed the one Jason has can burn a few things.. Corn, pits, etc. Wonder if a different pellet would make a difference??

There are huge differences in btu content between white fir and oak for example.

Use corn if you can.

Yes they do. They have hard wood, soft wood, and "mix". I'm using a mix right now and so far it's better than the others.

Another thing I noticed is the quality of the pellets. If the bag is really dusty when I pour it in, the pellets don't like to slide down the hopper. When that happens, the fire runs out from starvation and only lasts about 6 hours when filled up. It makes a funnel and only half the bag goes down the hopper. You have to shove the rest down by hand!

I have had a pellet stove for years, love it. One bag can last for 2 days easily on low and keep 1,000 square feet warm.
How is it vented? There are different grades of wood pellets, I like the Lingnetics. The cheaper ones seem to crumble and not burn as well, you will go through them faster. Also need to store pellets in a dry area. I have never used corn or other types.
How has it been heating?

The best woodstove I have ever seen is the Warm Morning, dont know if they make them anymore, they werent pellet stoves. They could cut down to last for 24 hrs, if you used Red Fir. That was in the northwest, I could imagine two days with oak.

We bought a batch like that a few years ago. Rob put a screen at the bottom of five gallon bucket, filled it halfway, shook, filled the rest and we used a plastic food scoop to fill the stove.

Any body ever looked at the anthricite stoves. similar to the pellet but burns small chips of hard coal. I know not very green. I do however have access to lots of free anthricite. If you live in NE PA thats where to get it

It heats great when it's running. Did it take you a few weeks to play around with the settings so you could get it right? Maybe I'm being impatient?

I agree with the quality of pellet. I had some garbage before but I just bought some better pellets and I'm getting twice the time out of them now and half the mess.
