We recently started this addition/remodel in Wilmette and I thought I'd follow the progress here like some of our other members have so graciously done.
Here is the before shot:

Here we began the excavation for the foundation:

Slab is poured, clients kids and dog got to sign the concrete and put their hand/paw prints it and yesterday we knocked out the backfill.

So this week we begin demolition and rough carpentry. More to come.
Thanks.

Wow, that's a huge excavator for such a small dig. Is that the operator on the fence?
Yeah that's what I said when he was trying to unload it. He said with this machine he could knock it out in a couple of hours but with his smaller machine it would take him twice as long. I think he just wanted to show off his new piece of equipment, I think it's only a couple of months old.
The clients 8 year old son got to run it for a little while and that made his day. He was a natural.
No that isn't the operator at the fence, that's the dump truck driver. We had to haul a couple of loads off site.

Yeah it's a really small addition, only 10x20. We are taking out that porch and then blowing that wall open to the kitchen. We are moving a bathroom, adding a mudroom, and adding a sunroom.
New kitchen will be approx. 13' x 18'
Sun Room 8' x 8'
Mud Room 5' x 10'
Bathroom 6' x 7'
Edited: Here lets see if this helps

Great plans. Who does your drafting?
This particular architect is Steve Knutson out of Evanston. It's my first project with his firm but so far they seem to be top notch. Very detailed drawings and specs (they have a 15 page spec book for this little project) which I really appreciate because it saves me time on tracking down owner selections and I knew anyone I was bidding against was bidding the exact same thing.
I wish more clients would realize that if they spend a few extra bucks on the planning stage it will more than pay for itself in the finished product. So many times we get plans that are half finished and we try to anticipate what their selections are going to be when we are putting together pricing, if we give them allowances and they go over, I sometimes feel guilty that I didn't truly understand what they were wanting and they can get upset because their are going over budget. It's all very messy. With this project, it's all been very nice and neat and everything is ordered way ahead of time so there hopefully will be no major delays. This is the way drawings and specs should be done. :2thumbsup:

What kinds of changes did you have to make with HVAC system?
The existing heating system is all radiant hot water baseboard heat. We will be adding to that existing system. They have a newer space pac cooling unit in the house so they don't want to scrap it all together but we may need to. There's an allowance in the contract for a larger space pak if needed but we will determine that as we get ready for mechanicals.

Thank God the Z brick backsplash goes. It does doesn't it?
The bathroom shot is surreal. Is it a camera illusion or is everything in there so out of plumb it made me seasick?

It's got to be the camera angle. Everything is sagging toward the center of the structure but not as bad as it looks in that pic. I never noticed that until you said something.

Update!
Here's where we are after this weekend. We have the interior gutted and have our structural issues worked out with the architect so we can start back up with the framing. We had some unexpected bearing issues with the existing structure that we needed to get some signatures for so I don't have problems with the inspectors down the road. That was fun. I decided that I wanted to try and correct some of the sag in the floor so we went ahead and took out out the existing subfloor and since that's out I'm trying to get my plumber in to get some of his work knocked out now while it's all open for him. He's coming out on Monday to start that. In the mean time, we will get working on the addition framing and get these newly required beams in place.

Update: Drywall is installed, Walls and Ceilings are Primed, Wood Floors installed, all tile that we have is installed (short some backordered tile, had an order come out wrong so we have to tear it out and replace. Still need to grout all tile, just got the remaining floor tile yesterday.), Baseboard heaters are installed and operational.
We are in a bit of a stall mode now because we are waiting on the cabinetry which is expected to arrive in 2 to 3 weeks.
So here's some pics:

LMAO. Yes that's the wrong tile. It's supposed to be red but it's supposed to have more green in the pattern and the pattern is slightly different.
Here's a pic of what it is supposed to look like.

We've had some delays on some selections and backorders with the cabinets that cost us about 4-5 weeks but we are back on track. I should have everything finished this week except for some owner provided hardware and light fixtures which are on backorder.

That's the pantry cabinet. I will get better pictures with a real camera this weekend, hopefully after we get the painting and cleaning all finished up but for the meantime, that is a dark forest green cabinet. The range hood is the same color and both are intended to match the forest green La Cornue range that has been on order since mid November and is still not here. :censored:

I too have mixed feelings on the red tile but I think it works with what she is trying to do with this home. If you think the red tile is wild wait until you see what they came up with for the paint colors. I don't even think the H.O. is 100% on board with them but she has decided that is why she paid the architect and designer so she's going with what they recommend. It's a little too bright for my taste but I think it will turn out well.

I dig there style. I like the two different colored cabinets, the built in pantry is sweet.
For the love of god I hope those tiles look good when everything is done.
They have the old bones of the house and all their little ties back to a classic style but,
those tiles stick out.
Looks good though. You added most of that kitchen onto the back of that house right?

Most of the added space was used for the sunroom and staircase areas. Part of the kitchen was extended onto what was the existing screened in porch but most of the kitchen is just a gut reno of the existing.

Nope, it's a regular swing door with a sidelight on the left hand side. It might look a little funny in that picture because they wanted a screen door back there so I've got the screen door installed but I put the glass panel in for now because I don't want the screen getting ripped. The door and the screen door are painted right now because I didn't want them getting warped but we haven't had nice enough weather to paint the sidelight yet so that might look a little funny right now as well. :2thumbsup:

We reused 2 doors in another part of the house and I saved the old back door. Not sure where I'm going to use it yet but I've added it to my overwhelming collection of stuff that was too good to throw away in my garage. Does anyone else have this problem? I occasional see that show on TV called "hoarders" and I fear that's what my garage looks like.
