View Full Version : Clamps for glue ups?

I'm having a lot of trouble with the bar clamps I'm using right now for some major glue ups. I have a local guy helping me out and he has a lot of Bessey clamps. These things are working great!
I'm about to pull the trigger on about 20 of these; http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2021009/25230/REVO-Fixed-Jaw-Parallel-Clamp--31--Pair.aspx.
Before I do I thought I might ask the wood workers here if they're using something else that might be more cost affective and equally good.

Jason, have you considered asking over at Knots, the woodworking magizines forum??
Just go to Taunton.com and go ask the question at knots.
Personally I have Bessy's(sp).:)

We'll see what Leo's got to say
on the subject.
Bessys and Pony pipe clamps are
as good as it gets for me.
The Pony's have the advantage of
being the same cost no matter
how long the pipe.

The Bessy's are the best.
Pony's are nice to have to.
Bow clamps are pretty cool.
I think the Woodcraft brand clamps are bessy's.

The particular glue up I'm doing right now is gluing a 5/4" x 4 1/2" board to the face of a 5/4" x 8" board. The Bessey clamp reaches almost all the way across the 4 1/2" board and holds pressure all the way across unlike the bar clamps that only hold pressure at small points of the clamp. I would need twice as many clamps to do what the Bessey clamps do.
I threw out 3 irwin bar clamps tonight because they striped out. Seems to justify the cost to me.

I've got a few (12?) of the bessey k body clamps in various sizes and have always been happy with them...most of 'em are probably 8 years old or so, so haven't been keeping aware of what's new as they've always worked well for me.

The bessy are good but my personal preference are the pony's As Neo Said they are the same price no matter the length and provide a solid base to keep the material from bowing up at the glue joint.

The big difference I see is that pipe clamp only hold down 1" from the edge. It's hard to get in the middle of a 8" wide glue up unless you use 2 clamps and a cull. Even with that you might need a third clamp in the middle of the cull for those stubborn situations; when the board doesn't want to cooperate.

Jorgensens are the best for that application. I thought you were gluing up panels on edge or face frames. If not too wide I will use the vise grip clamps also.

I have 2 of the jorgenson cabinet master clamps, not as nice as the K body's or the revo's.

Where the heck did my post go? I should have been post 11
I only have Pony clamps in the shop. I do lots of glue ups and really don't have to many problems. I'm sure it is alignment you are dealing with. If you ecpect to get perfect alignment, forget it, not going to happen. Within a 64th should be attainable.
Whenever I do glue ups I will face my stock and run it through the planer to get it true. Then you have less fighting of the waves in the board.
I'm to cheap to own Bessy's.

I have 60 pipe clamps in the shop. Most of them are 36" (clampable space) and have some 5' 7' and 10'ers. At those prices I would have spent a mint.
I get the pipe clamps for about $7 ($9 now) and black pipe is about a buck a foot. Economical and workable. Every once in a while I would like some deep reach clamps. You need to prepare your stock correctly and you will end up with a flat glue up.

Right. Reverse the grain.
Leo G
November 24th, 2009, 10:34 PM
I don't follow that theory.
By preparing your stock correctly I mean....
Face your stock to have a true flat face.
Plane it so it is an even thickness.
Joint each meeting edge, flipping the board over so you have compementary angles in case the jointer is slightly out of square.
Apply equal pressure with the clamps. If you have to really tighten them down something is wrong, the boards should fit snug with light clamping pressure.
If you glue up your board and it has a slight curve in the clamps you will have a glue up with a curve. Check the board with a straight edge and adjust the clamping pressures to get the flattest glue up.
You need to put clamps on both sides of the board to balance out the pressures.

Are those the new Bessey Revo's? Or did you go all Leo and buy the cheaper Peachtree knockoffs?
I have a couple dozen of the old style Bessey K-body's, and I bought some of the Peachtree clamps when someone pointed out a sale on another woodworking forum. The Besseys are great, the Peachtrees are junk. It doesnt take much pressure for them to start slipping on the bar.
My clamp rack isnt mobile... I just hung a 3" strip of 3/4" ply about 4" off the wall. I can practically toss the clamps up onto the bar and they stay.
I cant afford any floorspace for a mobile clamprack, my shop is too small already.

Yes these are the new Revo's and while they are improved and hold up to 1500 lbs of tension, they still have the tendency to slide down the bar and hit your hand.
Gary Katz told me he uses these http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=11417&source=googleps and they don't hit your hand when you use them. I might get a few just to see if I like them any better.

Wow, Gary Katz. I read one of his books years ago when I had....wait for it...
a set of double-dutch doors to install. I nearly went crazy.
I love the K-Body clamp. I never minded the sliding. Got used to it.
Not much cabinetry in my life anymore. I used to make a lot of Shaker stuff with rail and stile and flat panel doors. I miss that work a lot.

Sometimes I miss making those damn clackers. They were knuckle-busting work though.
And not much profit.
Most of my orders came from some pretty hot women who were doing the Flamenco thang.
