View Full Version : Slow!

What's up with the slowness of the site? For the past couple of days, I experience glitches. When it happens, I check other tabs I have open to see if it's my connection or computer. Other sites run fine during the RC slowdowns.

Am I doing something wrong? I just waited about five minutes for a reply to post up, and it happened a bunch of times before that tonight. And I've noticed it a lot this week and before.

It's you. Not the site. It happens with age.

Yea. The speed on RC has been inconsistant.
I thought Len cleaned things up earlier this week, but I suppose mainting this site is an ongoing issue.

Should we be? I think so Chrome and Firefox run extremely fast in comparison to most browsers.. take them for a spin and see the difference it is like night and day

I'll check out Firefox, but unless RC runs better with Firefox, it isn't my browser that's the problem. I just waited a full seven minutes after clicking on the post reply tab before I could type this post.

Meanwhile, I was on two other sites posting and did some Googling and everything was running fast as hell.

It only happens to me on RC with any regularity.

What you were doing? (creating new thread, uploading and image, navigating from one page to the next and in which forum)
Did you have chat windows active?
What was the symptom? (slowness, error page, logged off)
What browser are you using and version (Fifrefox 3.5, IE7)
What time did you experience this? (central time please, so I don't loose something on the conversion)

We have had some intermittent issues I'm trying to pin down. Detailed feedback of when you have an issue would help me (and you if it's something I can pin down to client side) You can PM or email me info. I may not respond directly but I will look into it.

Site is loading very fast for me now.

I was just reading and responding to current threads.

Still getting this message at the bottom of the screen "done, but with errors on page"

My problems were around 10pm-11pm central time.

There was a slight delay in pages opening. Once the page appeared, the green bar at the bottom of the screen would stop around the 1/2 way point. Yet even though it did not show a page completely loaded I was still able to post in any given thread.

I'm stupid. How do I find out what browser I am using? I know it is not firefox because you have to physically apply that one.

.

This indicates that part of the page did not load, usually a script (like java) or an ad. This should not happen with us yet as all ads are served from our server, except some of the boardroom ads.

Whatever the browser, click Help - About. It will give you the program and version number.

I run FF, that has been my browser of choice for many years. It's running slow now, But I think I have some cleaning up to do on my CPU. I have had experiences load time, when i go to the site or clicks new post on my phone and on the cpu. I just chalk it up as someone is doing maintenance. Which I think it would be cool if you were to have a thread that notifies, so we know the dam site hasn't been taking over by Nazis

I run FF and don't have any issues. I clean up my CPU on a regular basis, run a Registry clean up, and Spy-wear at least once a week. I had lots of problems with speed and got lots of error messages before I started doing these things.

This is a better test about connection issues.

PingTest.net will give you a better idea of the quality of your connection and if you are having problems.

If your packet loss is high or your ping time is high it would be something to look into fixing.

being a participant on a few forums, I notice slow downs periodically on all of them

It appears to have nothing to do with browser (I use Opera), vBulletin, or the forum settings. I have accounted to the server's ability to handle the traffic.

As a forum gets busy and grows traffic, many owners have found a need to switch to more robust servers.

And then there's the issue of your ISP handling local traffic. Hey, it's saturday nite. Date nite. IM's, facebook, and porno downloads are sucking up bandwidth.

I have a lousy connection speed most days, however. YouTube is starting to take forever, starting and stopping. I guess I gotta get a better provider. I have SBC DSL right now. Connection speed is sucking big time.

My problems are navigating from one page to the next. Time of day is not important because it has been a consistant problem. After a couple of minutes of being on the site, navigation slows down. Taking several minutes (sometimes timing out) before moving to the next page.

Whether in the same thread, pulling up new posts, navigating to a new thread, or even opening mail it has been extremely slow. I'll have several windows open, and normally 2 "boards" open. This site is the only one with the problem. Am running IE 8. Have 3 computers, and the problem is the same on all three.

Having just RC open does not make a difference.

TooledUp

It can be affected by what other sites are hosted on the same server and what kind of processes they're using. If they're using a lot of cgi (perl) based programs then that takes up a lot of cpu load and will slow down the other sites on the same server. A lot of cron jobs running at the same time can also slow it down.

A dedicated server is the best way to go but they ain't that cheap. If it's affecting people at a certain time of day then it may well be down to cron jobs or another site on the same server that takes a heavy load of traffic at a certain time of day.

Just in case anybody cares:

1. Tries to navigate fron the "new posts" page to another page. 8 minutes later, nothing.

2.Tried to do it by opening another page in a new tab got "interenet explorer cannot open this page" message.

3.Hit my home page button, and went right to my default home page. Navigated from there to other pages, not a problem.

4.Go to get back from "my favorites", nothing.

5. Close the browser and open a new one, and can go back to Remodel Crazy.

It seems like the RC site lets me navigate a certain amout before it just stops. This has been happening for a couple of week. And it is only on this site. Todays problem happened at 9:34 am Saturday the 2nd.

Try going to tools/settings/internet options. Click on the privacy tab and then advanced. Tick the override automatic cookie handling and then tick always allow session cookies.

Back to the advanced tab - Now click the sites button and type in this web site address and click always allow.

Restart IE and see if that works.

If you have IE here is what you do.

1. Make a tab with RC as a favorite.
2. Put your IE icon in the same area that the tab is (on desktop)
3. Close RC, click IE icon, click RC tab.

I can do all that in about 7 seconds and it refreshes all. I have gotten to the point of just doing this every 10 minutes or so when Im in here. If you forget to do it look down at your who's online. If it reads 0 then you need to refresh by killing the site. That or all your friends are sleeping.

Actaully, the chat feature could have a lot to do with the slowness of the site. Chats put a heavy load on the bandwidth and with this being on a hosted server then it could very well be the source of the problem with speed.

Maybe the admin could disable it for a day or so to see if it makes any difference..?

For those using IE, you can try Disabling script debugging.
http://www.sureshotsoftware.com/articles/scripterrors.html

Some things to look for.
Any installed add-ons or toolbars. (disable them and try)

Norton Anti-virus (or internet security) This program is known to cause issues. (try disabling temporarily to test)

Try another browser, like Firefox (http://www.remodelcrazy.com/forum/www.mozilla.com/firefox/), Chrome (http://www.remodelcrazy.com/forum/www.google.com/chrome), Opera (http://www.remodelcrazy.com/forum/www.opera.com/) or Flock (http://flock.com/) (based on Firefox).

Make sure your PC has current security patches, and make sure Java (http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) and Flash (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/) are current as well.

The updating and maintenance of the site is an on going issue..

When a problem is posted Len has to see what is causing the problem and if it is on our end, the software or the server..

A lot of the problems you experience on the site are script errors..

Firefox un like most browsers will fix or repair the script errors and you will never know they exist..

IE does not do that.. I do not run IE, not sure if Len does so a lot of times I do no see the errors you guys are experiencing unless you mention them..

A lot of time it is the software and/or your computer and settings and not the server or anything we can do to fix it..

The software company releases patches that upgrade and fix problems as they are reported to them

Which means sometimes there is not an immediate fix to the errors that you get, we have to wait for someone else to fix them for us.

If you look to the bottom of the screen it shows the software version we are running. They release a patch we update it and the software version you see changes..

A few of the other forums chose to stay with the older versions to avoid these headaches but they do not allow for a very visually appealing site our the addons that we run..

So you either have a older Plain Jane site or a new one that allows for a few more features and modifications..

The software company is on version 4.0 and reading the feedback they still have a way to go to make it stable..

Eieio
January 3rd, 2010, 09:12 AM
The chat software is only IE and Firefox compatible. It may work in others but it only specifies these two.

I guess we can try to disable it for a few days and see if it helps..

I doubt that it will.. We have upgraded to the new server and have not seen anything that would indicate that the server is the problem.. Even though I am nowhere as capable as Len to make that a true statement :rolleyes3:

In 4 months we have updated, upgraded everything we can to make the forum run as smoothly as possible and will continue to do so..

This is why we always want the feed back to keep tweaking stuff as needed.

When you see resolving host (http://www.google.com/search?q=resolving+host+slow&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a), that is an issue on your end. Somewhere between you and your ISP is slow to lookup the domain.
(chorme link (http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=1bb0e9b089013d95&hl=en))
