I read an article in my local paper that states there is a trend of people selling off the McMansion and finding their way into a smaller, more affordable home to maintain.
My question is this. During the present economic conditions, what would you consider desirable as a home purchase? How many bedrooms, baths, etc. What creature comforts do you consider non-negotiable? AC, central vac, whirlpool tub....
I'm curious because I moved from a 2500 sq. ft. custom that I designed and built myself, to an 800 sq.ft. moneypit with a 1200 sq.ft. garage/laundry/gameroom. I've never felt more comfortable and at peace in my life, so for me, downsizing (even though it's been an 8 year renovation) is the best thing that could have happened to me, aside from the divorce that prompted it.:)

How are you heatin that garage. I've never been to Jersey but would imagine it gets good and chilly up there.

I am ready to move into a 1 bedroom 1 bath condo. I am sick of having too much house.

Anyone want to by a newly renovated home in DC?

The laundry area is about 100 sq.ft. It has a strip of electric base to take the chill off. I keep it around 55 or so in the winter. the rest of the building is not conditioned space, although the kids gameroom warms up nicely with an oil filled electric space heater when needed. I don't believe that the finished space of the building ever actually falls below freezing although it gets close.
