A local person had an add in the paper selling some local Black Walnut logs. I went and took a look today and bought them for $40. I have a Sawyer that lives just up the road from me so I'll be taking them up there tomorrow and we'll see what he can get from it.

Should be a few nice boards in there. The crotch of the trees have some interesting grains to it when they get cut. Their won't be enough to make a large piece of furniture from but maybe enough for a few smaller projects.

I put a Baseball cap on the center log for scale.

I found out when I built my wifes Christmas present(jewelry box) that I am allergic to black walnut.

Shame too as I have access to a bunch of it!

Great find Jason.
Should be some nicely figured wood in a couple of those logs.
I don't recall the details, but If I remember correctly there is a specific drying process for walnut to achieve the best color. You may want to research it or someone else here may know more.

I just asked a good Sawyer from another forum about that. I'm going to cut it in 6/4 slabs and turn the logs so I can get the most from the crotches.

Here's one of his. I'm hopeing for 6 to 8 of these from the logs I have.

That wood makes a great guitar, back and sides only. Spruce for the top.

I'm told by a few guys that know this work "hands down" to kiln dry it if I want to. They say it's very forgiving if you dry it fast. It will not warp easily. Once it gets done being rough sawn I'll take it up the road to a kiln.

I thought air dried gave a person the best colors.

Jason
I was trying to find out about retaining the color, which I never did find. I must be mistaken about that one.
But the link above has some interesting tips I thought you may find worth reading.

Looks like slow, controlled kiln dry is the best bet to control cracking in the figured area. Thanks!

That piece in the pic as a beautiful grain to it.
I'd turn it into a wall clock with a small face off off to the side so that the wood is the focal point.

How the hell are ya Daren?

If you don't want us to know so much about your life then you should probably stop posting so much of it on Da Pub.

Glad as hell to see you over on this side of the crazy.

Hello again Jason, I'll poke around a little while. I used to run my own construction company, I am a licensed plumber. New construction as a sub mostly and remodels as the GC...but it's not much fun for me to talk about any more :dozey: I got just bored with the work ?

I dove into the sawmill thing in 2004 and never looked back. It's 2X the work and 1/2 the money...4X the fun, sometime you just gotta do what you gotta do.
