Ping test will also give you packet loss info, and the ping is an average of several pings for better accuracy. this is a better quality test, not just a short download speed.
http://pingtest.net/learn.php

166ms ping - I would look into that, that's very high and will make requests to any site slow.

Thanks to the OP !!!

My awful speeds are the 3G/4G connected to my Toshiba laptop. Laptop is in the third year of use but has plenty of guts.

When connected to WIFI the thruput is as fast as my hitting enter.

I am taking the laptop and Sprint card to the Sprint store here in Austin.

thanks again for giving me a comparison of with the others:2thumbsup:

I use the Sprint laptop card 3g only and I am impressed with its speed.. Even using it with my older laptops.. They released and up date a few days ago that has made a world of difference as well.

Do you see a noticeable difference when surfing with the card v.s the wifi connection?

The data is compressed so the speeds registering on the test are a bit misleading when using the laptop cards.

Let me test mine

Well I finally got the 4g on my wifi box figured out.. The changed out the old box and correct the plan error on my data plan..

4g is not fully rolled out but I have a tower across the street from my house and I talk to the techs sometimes in passing while they work on it..

This is on a 4g connection with a 50% signal.. Not to bad, I hope when they fully deploy and the signal hits 100% it goes up a bit and latency drops down..

Yes, a linksys E1000. The speeds fluctuate, anywhere from .5 to 3.0 in the house.
Later today I'll have my white trash waterproof router box mounted outside( I promise a picture)
Then I think my speeds will increase.

I need to find out the operating temperature range for the router and the antenna. I wonder if the winter temps will slow it down?

As a test I would remove the router and connect directly to the Clear box and test the speeds..

There several routers that had problems communicating with the Clear devices.

Wireless is always tricky. Wifi transmits on the open 2.4 ghz frequency. Because it's open most wireless devices also use it. Wireless mice and keyboards, cordless phones, microwave ovens, baby monitors and the list gets very long.

The clear modem only works with specific routers.. They also have to be connected a certain way to work.. I had this problem before. It is on the Clear website how to set up the modem and routers to work correctly..

Easy test is to remove the router from the equation and see if speeds increase..

Try pingtest.net (http://pingtest.net/)
This is a better indication of quality of your connection.

Your ping times are directly affected by your DNS settings too. By default your computer/router uses your ISP's DNS. but usually you can get an increased speed in looking up web address's by changing your DNS setting.

I usually recommend one of these 2.
Google Public DNS (http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/)
Open DNS (http://www.opendns.com/) (great for monitoring/filtering content too)

Look for packet loss. If you are loosing packets you probalby have a bad connection somewhere. If you are using wifi you probably are getting inference. Try changing channels on your router.

I can't stand running on my Sprint 3G, it's slow as hell, but the 4g is a little better. I guess when they start loading it down with the devices it will match the crappy 3g speed. I only run the hotspot when there's NO other choice, typically I'll wait until I get to the office or home. The only reason I deal with it is because it's a company phone.

I went out and bought the new NetGear Neo for streaming movies hoping that would be better/faster than the WII. Hands down it blows the WII away. This thing is the cats ass. Still have streaming trouble because of Sprints slow internet but the over all experience with the NetGear is outstanding. $50 well spent.
