Remodel Crazy is a place where contractors, vendors, and trade associates can gather to enhance the image of our professions in the eyes of the public. Our mission is to help those who come here become better professionals by imparting our little bit of combined wisdom and experiences to those who want to improve themselves and their business. It is also a place for the public, especially homeowners, to see that we have a vested interest in improving our image and results through education and dedication.

Next poster should edit as appropriate. :)

OK, I'm back.

The vision or mission statement will get done by the weekend. We got going and got real busy fast.

We are aware there are other forums and Rory, Len and I know Remodel Crazy has to be unique. How do you do that and still keep it a forum.

Len is working on the blog right now and that will be an important part of RC.

Being different, that will happen and as someone said it either rings your bell or not.

And Chris, if you read this post. This is your site, you make it different, I'm not going to make this a Silvertree site or a Paul site. I will work to make it a good place to post.

Paul, is there anyway to build a LinkedIn group with members from here? I mean, I looked at my profile in LinkedIn and because of you, Rory, and others, I am connected to about 35 other people. I know one was started for CT, but that's different. One joins L/I and builds connections. Can RC 'join' with all its members building connections as one?

I'm going in circles here; do you know what I mean?

Rory is the Linkedin expert, lets ask him about it.

Rory?

I have about 56-58 1st line connections which stretches out to about 680,000 total people via the 3rd tier.

Yes, it is very easy to create a GROUP on LinkedIN.

Just build it and they will come.

Yes, its easy to start a group. I know as an individual, though, you build connections. Can a company join LinkedIn and do the same thing? If so, then RC could join and would instantly have connections through its members and their connections. See what I mean?

I don't think it works that way, but I bet there is a LinkedIN Plug-In out there to accumulate all of the other peoples connections.

But, what good would having people who did not sign up to join do?

Don't rush the "Mission Statement". I think that we have a great opportunity to discuss it and I'm sure Paul, Len, and Rory are hearing us.

I think there's a great core group here, and interesting too.

Jason, I'll put it out there, I think you should see it before I call it done. Its open to discussion to all members.

The Vision though, that's mine. I'll post that too.

Fair?

Part of the mission statement may want to include a two-way street, where the contractor and the customer have a mutual R.E.S.P.E.C.T and Understanding of each other parties purpose in the contractual business relationship.

Also, from the perspective of the contractor, that we are definitive about what we will and will not be doing in a contractual agreement.

Alongside that, the consumer shall knowing recognize and seek out a contractor who takes the pain-staking time to work out all of the minute details to put forth such an agreement in writing.

Now, lets learn a little more about Respect.

Copy and pasted from elsewhere, but you get the gist

The primary goal of these forums is objective and intelligent discussion of their respective topics, so as to foster creativity, innovation, and at the very least, learning. We wish to create a forum community that prides itself on thoughtful and useful discussion with statements backed up by fact or well argued opinion (as opposed to opinion based on, or driven by, angst, hearsay, ignorance, individualism, politics, propaganda, resentment, zealotry, and similar entities).

Could you do a business Facebook page to promote RC? You don't have to be a FB to see Business Pages, just to connect.

For what it's worth Ed, I don't mind giving out tips and tricks to homeowners. I know that I am the only member here that feels that way but just wanted to add that.

I wouldn't be a part of a DIY only board though but I wouldn't hesitate to help when they stumble in here or other forums I'm on.

That's where CT is different than here. One of the ways I should say.

I don't think we really want a DIY site.
So Blue, what do we do thats different so far?

What I just posted. Here you have a DIY area. CT does not.

The rest is very similar and less moderated so far.

Blue I don't mind giving DiYers a few tips here and there either. I wouldn't want to work for a guy who thinks he could do it all and "just doesn't have the time" anyway.

Moderated can be a good thing. When you have too much random junk all over the place new people aren't going to want to come, there are too many inside jokes floating around and it reduces "relative content" and IMO bad for SEO.

There are plenty of "thick-skinned" people who can take a lickin' and dish one out, but when it comes to disagreeing with a mod they get their panties in a bunch. So what if you post something outside of what the guys hosting the place don't like? Why care so much if it's moderated? :p

Just for a bit of an archival background, Contractor Talk, when it first started, willingly allowed homeowners to post on the forum without any malice.

When it became too much of a distraction from the contractors private discussions, the DIY site was launched.

When people start to complain about the same nagging problems all of the time, the Moderation team will need to act on the reports and decide if they want to let everything/anything just slide, or to start enacting various policies to keep the majority more content rather than worry about pleasing the few.

This forum will find that the thick line becomes thinner and thinner as time elapses and harmony becomes convoluted, after the new forum aroma disipates.

Yeah, I forgot we have a DIY spot, Duh?

I think whats different is we could end up with more associates and vendors.
That may be interesting.
We really do want woman to join, that's different and will cause some to leave.

We are not different in most ways, what I think will be different also is our more open policy for submitting articles and such. This will cause some problems, but that can be worked out.

Tonight I tried to go to Contractor Club, I couldn't access the pro group, might be a glitch?
I went to Contractor Talk which is a very vibrant site, and a little clubby at times but its the best.
I went to the Mike Rowe site which is a cross of education, good conversation and woman who chat and some that are blue collar workers.

All those sites are pretty good.
When the vision and mission statement are done no one will be surprised, I think that Remodel Crazy will have stories, and the other sites don't have stories and a blog.
This will end up being one of the big differences.
We are not even a week old, I think Remodel Crazy says it all, lets celebrate being Remodel Crazy.

One thing I believe,
Remodel Crazy has the best name by far, only need to make happen now.

One thing that definitely is different here is that many of us truly want to help other people. If you come to a site like this only looking for business, you will be sorely disappointed. If you come to a site like this expecting an instant answer to a stupid question, you will be sorely disappointed. And if you come to a site like this expecting it to be all fun and games, you will also be sorely disappointed.

The age of social networking is upon us and probably not go away soon. Learn it; live it, you will get business. Contribute freely and you will get a return.

Ask a stupid question on most forums and when the popcorn is gone, the dust settles and the blood is cleaned up, the OP is no where to be found. The only thing he learned was that there reallyy are stupid questions, especially the one that is asked. Here, we want him to get his answer but also learn a bit more. We want him to stay around and eventually contribute. Yes, it will get old answering the same questions over and over again, and we will constantly be amazed at how ignorant of business some are, but its new and important to the person asking the question.

We have our fun and games, we will stir up dust and draw blood, but I think we all recognize the serious side of contracting. We all want to 'compare notes' with other people and learn from a collective wisdom found no where else.

The other thing that will set us apart is the resources that our founders are going to have available here. Blog connections, webinars, interviews, product reviews, and so on. That will all take time but will be a great addition to a great site.
If we can do all that, we really WILL have a very different site.

Well said Mike, I think you hit all good points.
I'm tired from the launch and trying to get a few bids done all the while still being a husband and father.

The girls took care of things for me,
My wife left me for a man who doesn't have an internet connection and the girls ignore me, so I'll have more time to work on the site now.
