I've been lucky but a friend lost $20,000. worth from a locked enclosed trailer at a reno site, visible from the road on a somewhat remote sideroad.

He needed to get back to work, I lent him a few, but instead of letting him get some tools right away, he felt the company (small town) treated him with undue suspicion, although he'd carried all his insurance with them for over 10 yrs, no claims, and reviewed his tool inventory for them in the past year.

Was he lucky to get about 60% of his tools replaced, essentially agree not to claim within (?) years and get frustrated each time he went to get a tool from the trailer only to remember it had been stolen? How have your experiences been

Over the past couple of years we have had around $2 K worth of tools stolen. Never enough to make an insurance claim. Just enough to set us back a little. It is very upsetting to have some looser steel the items you need to feed your family. Fortunitly, we did have some backups.

Two years ago the theft problem got so bad I actually contacted a local paper and asked them to do a story on the problem. Contractors and landlords were getting hit really bad.

I'll tell you what. When a crack head breaks into a house to steal copper, they do a lot of damage. Aside from breaking in windows and doors, they kick holes in the walls to get to the plumbing.

We have been very fortunate not to have been robbed while working in New Orleans. One of the other contractors was not so, they stole his whole rig the first time. The second time they broke into his trailer and took everything.
The second time was in a hotel parking lot with a 24hr security guard.
We figured the guard was probably in on it.
