View Full Version : My stairs are safe.

I finally got around to tearing my carpet off my steps a month ago.
Cleaned all tack strips and staples from the treads and risers.

The first 4 steps going upstairs was an abomination, they were deadly.
They have been patched batch together with what ever scraps were around.
They were flimsy, shaky and loose, I was afraid for my life walking up and down them.

I was worried about the baby and my 4 year old, I can deal with the old lady.

The upper 13 steps were on sort of stringers. Mostly notched, wedged and nailed into each other.

I am almost done, I need to do some sanding on the stair nose and round it over and distress it some. I am going to try and sand a couple worn spots in the treads, like where they are in the old one's.

I will touch them up with 100 grit and I think stain them all, I will probably have to keep the skirts painted, the one on the right was pretty beat up when I was putting it back together.

Are your new treads thicker than
the old, or is it an illusion?

They are about 1/8" thicker.

I need to sand over the edges so they don't look so thick.
The old one's are 1" these were close to 1 1/8".
I had a hard time finding some ash, most is used around here for firewood.

It doesn't get real big around here with ash borror beetle.

I will get them all tuned up and looking 120 years old just like the rest of them.

There is no stringers under those either. All notched and wedged in the skirts.

No one around you has a planer?

Not hardly anyone I get along with anymore.

I paid the mill to plane one side down to about 1".

I stop back, pay for them and pay for something else, drive around to load it and it was not quite how I wanted it. I loaded it up and went.

See, I told you I need to buy a planer.

You know how hard that is to do when the walls are finished all around the steps? I laid on my back under there putting it all back together.

I still smell like the depression.

See, I told you I need to buy a planer.

I know it doesn't come in your favorite color but some guys over at CT were saying that HD had the Dewalt DW735 planer on sale for $279. For that price, I think I would pretend it was green if I had a need for a planer.

The walls are insignificant it's what's under the stairs that counts.

So you smell about 2 years old
Smell your new kids head that's what you smell like.

I kind of miss smelling babies heads My kids are 21 and 18
My 18 YO smells like a cheech and CHong movie.

I really miss having access to the Rockwell 30" we had in College.

Even with the nicked blades from someone running a nail through it.
Shifting knives was a pain but worth it.

I'm about to put my 13" Portable Jet planner on CL. $250 plus shipping and it's yours. Cost me $420.00 3 years ago. Had it serviced 1 year ago and it just sits in my shop now; back behind the Festools.

Hey Man, I've got a 15" Powermatic Spiral head planer, but you aint gonna see me load that up in MY truck any time soon! :laugh3:

You gotta have the smaller ones to take out to the field on occasion.

You got a point.

Before I go to the field everything is sized. But older homes really need the onsite adjustment capability.

Under the stairs? a ceiling on one side and a dead space with the finish floor under it. About 34" deep by 34" tall at the back and 34" wide.

I want a big one, I also want festool's big 2 handed planer, I also want that older Makita I told you about, I can't remember the model.

Part of the deal is, the orginal's were rough sawn on the backs of them, I kind of wanted these the same way.

I was just trying to make them look like they were supposed to be there.

I even put some cut nails in the treads like all the other one's.

I get at them with my sander, I'll make them look aged.

I thought they fit nice though, they are also safe now.
