View Full Version : Laminate Trimming

I've laid up some aluminum laminate onto a piece of MDF to be used as a tabletop where I clean my guns.
I must be doing something wrong, because I'm nicking the hell out of the laminate at the edges when I trim off the excess.
I'm using a Porter Cable laminate trimmer with a brand new flush trim bit. And It doesn't feel like I'm tipping the trimmer base plate. If I set the blade high enough to stop the nicking, it won't trim.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

How much overhang is there?
If it's more than an 8th.....

Try putting a piece or 2 of masking tape on the edge so the bearing runs on the tape.

yep. This will leave you with an overhang the thickness of the tape. Use a mill file to finish it off.

yep or petroleum jelly, and the key is the cutter depth to only cut and not a millimeter more

This is a good use for vaseline. I happen to use butchers wax to lube the edge when trimming. I also do not use the bearing type bits for trimming the solid carbide flush and 7 degree only. I have had too many :censored: bearings freeze up and burn the edge. there is also less tear out with this type of bit as it is smaller and will create less chatter,

More than an eighth I think was the problem.
I don't know WTF was happening. I've done this before, today every damn thing I did was wrong.
I went with the tape and finally got it okay. It's just a POS tabletop for me, but I was thinking I should know how to do this better.
Thanks for all the tips.
Next week I'll be asking how to clear a jam on a nail gun.

I've graduated to 30 weight oil and a good nylon rope.
