I built this a while back. It is a bank of drawers for underneath the ladder-stairs that lead up to a loft.
The reason I bring this gem up is because I got a call from a guy in LI NY who saw it on my website and wanted me to build one. He asked a price and I gave it to him and he didn't freak out, so I cleared that level. He asked how long to build it, I told him a couple of days but that I was 5 weeks out. He said he would talk to his wife about it. So not a yes, but not a no. He called me on a Saturday at 5 in the afternoon, so he knows I am a hard worker.

That's really cool Leo nice work.
Note: above comment has nothing to do with Be Nice To leo Day even though there are 3 hours and 53 minutes left. Just a cool Project!

That's cool just as a free standing unit. Don't even need the stairs.
Which undermount door glides are those?

You even dovetail the back panel of the drawer. Most guys just cut a dado and drop it in pinned with brads.
Mmm Mmm, das' some mighty fine box buildin'.

I've never even done that. Why bother, by the time you get the setup and transfer all the pcs you could have finished the backside of the drawer.

That's what I'm seeing at the back of the bottom drawer though, no?

I mean I have never done the dado. I always dovetail 4 sides.
Yes, that is what you see.

makes sense, you're already set up and dovetailing the front so it's just a flip.
I watched too much New Yankee Workshop when I first started woodworking. Norm always dadoed that joint for some reason.

I never understood it either. But I think it is because he is copying old time furniture. That furniture had hand cut dovetails. It takes a good amount of effort to hand cut the dovetails so you could gain a lot of time by using a dado at the backside. If he is doing a repro of the design it would be proper to put the dado in there.

I had an El Cheapo Porter Cable dovetail jig. Once I got the hang of it, it was easy as hell. My biggest problem was concentrating on making sure I was dovetailing the correct board in the right config. Once you get used to it, it's fast.
Leo, how did you join up the face frames on this understair drawer unit?
Leo G

Same as I do on a normal face frame, pocket screws.
The left side was just normal, the right side was the inverted staircase shape. I just pocket screwed into the shaped stile just like a normal FF.

Really nice , crisp work on that unit Leo. Did you consider letting the right side of the drawer faces run a little wild and follow the slope of the stairs? That might have made cool detail.

It goes under a loft stair/ladder, it does follow the slope of the stairs.

Looks like it was a fun project, a little different.

Sorry Leo I was not clear, I meant the right side of each drawer face matches the angle of the stair. The drawer faces are not rectangular in my idea.

They wanted the biggest drawers possible. Doing this would have reduced the size quite a bit. It would look OK though, nothing against the concept.

When do we get to see it installed?

You don't. This was a bye bye project. The client came by and picked it up, I waved bye bye as it drove away. I never got a picture from them.

Ingrates. I'll bet they screwed the pooch on the install too. :laugh3:

I've made a vanity, 2 tall oak cabinets and that bank of drawers for them. I only got a picture of the tall oak cabinets from them.
