I was outside this morning getting the smoker fired up and I could hear a chainsaw running down at the end of the street. The Firehouse is down there and they were taking a tree down.
Soon I heard the noise of a falling tree followed by a very strange noise that sounded like a building crunching, followed by many foul words being yelled. I just had to go see what happened.
Who needs to hire a tree service when you got your own chainsaw right?:laugh3:

Tree felling,

When felling a tree, if anyone involved says
"I'm pretty sure if we cut it like this it will fall right where we want it to".........stand waaaay back.

The tree not only took out a small addition to the Firehouse, but it took out the $40k back up generator as well. I guess a local tree guy did the work. The problem is, he's no longer in business and therefore has no insurance.
OUCH!

Ouch! Someone's going to have to stand before the town council and explain why they need more money this year.

Someone should loose their job for hiring an uninsured out of business tree service guy. How much did they save now?

Agreed.
Around here the off duty firemen are some of the biggest uninsured and unlicensed hacks driving down the prices and screwing things up. People think they are really getting a deal because the guys are "firefighters" WTF - how does that mean that you are also a qualified contractor? :smash:

So Jason. This is all your fault. Well, maybe not yet. But I'm sure your taxes will be rising to pay for this blunder. That sucks.
They'll probably sue the pants off the guy that felled the tree even though they knew darned well he had no insurance. Poor sap.

I think he's a member of the Volunteer Fire department so he may be off the hook. This is a pretty big blunder though. I know it cost about 40k to install the generator system. It may not be so much to replace just the generator that took the hit.
All in all it was a stupid move and now the small town that is mostly retired or broke will have to figure out a way to pay for it. Sounds like we need a new Chief; one that understands risk and liability.

So they hire this guy with no insurance, and who is part of the volunteer fire department, which might mean he has qualified immunity from civil action.
Sounds like at least $60K to put things back like they were. Cheap is expensive.
I think the locals should revolt and demand that their taxes not be used to fix this.

In every small town I ever lived in, anyone who was a member of the VFD was immune from any law, rule, regulation, common sense, or any other liability what so ever.

The last tree I cut down was on the river bank. I wanted to avoid felling it on the ice and having to wear hip waders to buck it up. I notched it scientifically, strategically placed wedges and hammered them in. I had about a 90 degree window that I would have claimed success in.
The tree, ignoring all my plans and efforts fell backwards onto the ice. Fortunately the ice was thick enough to hold it.
Does this mean I could be a fireman?
Good Luck

Yeah, that really pisses me off.
I watch some idiots cut one down 1/2 block from me, it fell on their garage so I took them over a business card.:laugh3:

No. It doesn't have anything to do with competence.
Were you born there?
Are you a good ol boy?
Those are the prerequisites.
All others need not apply.
