Ok all of the paints stores are touting the eco friendly paint. Low Voc. What is it about.

Am I going to have to apply 40 coats of the stuff for the walls to look good.

Any brands leading the pack on the quality of this type of paint?

Have you used any of it and what were the results?

Any demand for it from clients??

Most latex paint is already low VOC, and the zero VOC have been around for years and are pretty decent, well atleast the ones from the paint stores, I only use SW and ICI.
Indiana is doing away with all alkyds the first of the year, so I will be a green painter if I like it or not.

Is there any differences in coverage or Paint quality/durability??

Most VOC paints are equal in coverage to other paints. Mythic is suppose to be at the top but i think it is an overpriced green thing.
As Modern said most companys have been doing low VOC for awhile now. Most all paint manufactures are trying to get into the green movement by offering greener friendly alternatives.
I just used some Pittsburgh eggshell that when I got it i noticed the label was different and it was now claiming to be low voc with a green friendly label.

I do think the coverage would vary from brand to brand and would imagine some green paints being a little thinner than others

It depends on the application. The thing I am wondering about is deck stains and things and how they will hold up compared to the oil based. We should still be able to get cover stain and BIN and things.
Some painters I know of around here are freaking out about no more alkyds, but I bet it was the same when they did away with lead paints back in the day. The maufacturers will come up with newer and better products.
For the most part I think doing away with the oil will be a good thing, I have seen thousands and thousands of gallons of paint thinner poured out on the ground illegally over the years, I aint no tree hugger, but that cant really be good.
The waterborne will be better for the painters and the consumers health, and with all of the advances in paint technology I dont think the alkyds will be missed for long.

I agree with Modern and Workaholic. We use SW, all low VOC, I think being part of the "california division" we get some new products first, we have been using Southwest Builders and Sologloss for a long time and it is great.

Myths about low VOC and 0 VOC

VOC = Volitaile Organic Compound

As modernstyle stated above, low VOC paints have been around for years, the catch...VOC free paint is just that...VOC free. The Tints/Colorants, are not. So as soon as you add color to that VOC free paint, guess what....not low VOC or VOC free anymore.

The good news. Benjamin Moore has a new paint that is VOC free, a new 100% acrylic colorant ( also VOC free ) for unlimited colors. It's better than any product out there at this time. The coverage is better, faster re-coat times, better color retention, and very durable, as well as Green Guard and Green Seal approved.

The bad news.....cost.... Interior goes for around $47/gal and exterior around $50/gal
