View Full Version : Introductions & Food Requirment Poll

All right folks - we have a certain cranky squirrel that is thinking that the food requirement has gone far enough & should die a quick & honorable death like tree-fiddy. :surrender:
Well seeing he doesn't want to just put his foot down - what does everyone else have to say, should it remain as part of the unofficial official charter, or should we ban the next one that brings it up. (like tree-fiddy)
Have at it & no :censored: swearing about it.

It stays, this is how the place was founded. What's wrong with bringing food to the party?

Could you please explain that Leo? What do you mean by founded?
It makes me cringe everytime I see it like that gay tree fiddy they do at CT. I think it actually scares them off.

I think it is a great "inside" joke for many of us, but I agree with blue, I think it may not present us in the best light to a new member. I can think of only a few times that the new member "got it" and responded with food.
I think we'd be better off welcoming new members with comments and questions on topics (location, type of work, size/type of company) that would encourage them to post more.

If a teaser about bacon flusters them then RC is definitely not a good fit for them anyway.

Let's make it ammunition from now on instead of bacon.
Less confusing to newcomers. :rolleyes3:

If they can be scared off by a request to bring bacon,
Then Modern will have them peeing their pants.
I didn't get the joke when I joined either, but it was a refreshing indication to me that this was a group that didn't take itself too seriously.
that is precisely why I spend time here rather than other sites.
If we are required to let old jokes die, then we would have to quit making fun of Rory too and that is the highlight of my day.
Squirrels are technically vermin.

Seeing as how I may be construed as an alleged perpetrator I have been trying to stay out of the vote. I just want to point out that me and the ole lady have noted this same type of behavior while babysitting the youngin's.
The back and forth usually starts when they get hungry.

As the primary perpetrator of the food requirement, I really don't feel one way or another about it. While I do like the light hearted nature of the food requirement, I also find it a bit hard to keep coming up with new material sometimes. Some of it gets old, but really, we are all a bit crazy here. Look at what happens at some other forums. Some guy says hello and many times NO ONE even says hello back to him. Or, he makes some comment about something and gets his butt handed to him.
We don't do that here and I don't think there has been anyone who didn't get at least a full page of welcomes back. In some respects, I understand that maybe its a bit overdone, but so what. None of the newbies have complained and many contribute when they can.
We can be serious when we need to, remember that. Now I need to go read the poll and vote early and often.

I've got to agree that RemCraz holds the record for longest and friendliest introduction threads.
Pan Fried Squirrel
(For this recipe you will want to gut and skin the critter)
In a hot pan, melt a couple of slabs of butter.
Add boneless squirrel pieces.
Use high heat to quickly sear and seal the meat.
Reduce heat, add chopped onion, mushrooms and fresh garlic.
Cook until onions are clear.
Cover and simmer on low heat for 1-2 beers. (30-40 mins. for city boys)
Spoon over whole grain toasted hamburger bun or plain wonder bread.
Top with Sweet Baby Rays Chipolte Barbecue sauce and serve.
Good Luck

We could make it a requirement and part of the registration process that a new person has to indicate whether they want food to be mentioned by anyone welcoming them here.
I feel that this is the best way to proceed, and creates an atmosphere of equality and choice, rather than censoring a practice which while may confuse some, might be embraced by others.
A question such as "Would you like to be asked to bring a food item to the forum, such as bacon, when active members begin the welcoming process?"
A simple Yes or No box can be checked. This should clear up any controversy or debate and allow us to proceed to more pressing matters. Such as does Leo really resemble Captain Kangaroo, and are the squirrels in Rory's attic space real or imagined.

Upon further reflection, and a pound of fresh bacon, I want to change my vote. In all seriousness, maybe we have played it out too much. However, I wouldn't want it completely erased from the intros. While it did have a good run for a while, I could see a real problem when Splinter pulls in more souls here. I don't have the time to come up with fresh material for multiple newbies at one time.
I really don't care what anyone else wants to do, but I am going to only talk about food periodically but NOT bring up the issue with every new intro. About half of those who answered the poll don't feel the issue has further merit and I wouldn't want those folks to become disenchanted here.
I mean, we are a serious forum, right? When the brats are gone, we sell the fridge.

Well I have to admit, I was torn on the issue. In all honesty it seemed to be getting a little old, but then it is a part of what makes Remodel Crazy - Remodel Crazy
As a few people have mentioned, name one other forum where people post an intro & actually get a decent welcome back. I think to get around one of the WTF is this objections, I think I can or we can come up with a nice sticky post in the intro area on a few of the oddball intricacies of RC - I am thinking of allowing the DIY crowd off with McD's or something similiar as we know their kitchen is probably still in shambles from that supposed 1 weekend remodel streching into a few months.

Bring food. It breaks the ice. It personalizes the conversation to a geographic location or ethnicity and gets us away from the seriousnous of work and business. It's the difference from the Crazies and the other forums. If they can't take a joke they won't be able to adapt to the forum.

I'm here, just been busy. I started this post race last year and was going head to head with Rory on post count, but he cheated and started doing 4-5 cut and paste posts a day. Left me in the dust, so I turned to food. Was doing fine with that until the prevailing sentiment was that we didn't need any more food. So now I am burying myself in my work. Since then, I haven't had time to devote to putting up pics of kids wearing skid shorts, helmeted fire walkers, or searching for, well, I did look for something about using less TP in another thread. I can understand RC wanting to develop a reputation for political correctness and to try to market to the Vegan contractors. I'm sure they make up a sizeable portion of the industry.
But at what cost?
Is it important enough to alienate The Canadians?
"According to a recent national survey, (2003) Canadians are passionate about bacon. When asked to choose between bacon and sex, more than four in 10 (43%) chose bacon! "
"Ladies, thinking about which fragrance will woo a man? Think bacon. When asked to rank various aromas by preference, 23% of men ranked bacon as number one. "
"And it seems bacon lovers think they are better lovers. When asked if they are good lovers, four out of five respondents (82%) who said they love bacon, also said they are good lovers. And when asked if they are romantic, four out of five respondents (81%) who said they love bacon also agreed they are romantic."
"The survey also revealed some noteworthy regional differences. It may be bacon trumps love in the Prairies. Nearly one in four of respondents (23%) from Manitoba and Saskatchewan wondered if 'my partner loves bacon more than me'.
"Of note - western Canadians are especially enamoured with bacon. Of respondents from British Columbia, 50% said they would give up sex before bacon, versus 37% of respondents from Quebec. "

I have a sneaking suspicion that our little poll will perpetually remain tied or very close to it. What that means for the newbies coming in we may never know.
Bacon rules!
Bodger
July 11th, 2010, 12:30 PM
In addition to being required to bring food, there should also be a mandate that newbies must vote for the food requirement to remain in place. This should tip the scales in our favor and allow us the added perk of defeating Rory's evil attempts to thwart the talk of our beloved bacon.
If a newbie brings fatback, this will be noted in their permanent record and be considered a plus when their annual performance review takes place.
Conversely, any references to tofu should be grounds for permanent ban.

I will soon be proposing that all newbies bring ammo as well, but I am waiting to see how the states react to the recent Supreme Court ruling on McDonald vs. Chicago.
Ammo and bacon. Has a nice ring to it. And of course, any food brought in that was killed by the bringee is a plus.
