I'm seeing dozens of jobs, paint, carpeting, handyman stuff, being done by guys who either know nothing of RRP or are ignoring it all together.
Same here. Its business as usuall. Took 5 paint bids on my interior. My home was built in '75. No mention of it. Some drywall removal on the garage ceiling from an old roof leak.
My siding guy that does HUD stuff got his cert. My electrician has never heard of it and laughed when I told him about it.

5 paint bids!? What, you don't know any painters?
Would love to hear how that went!

Oh, I do all our own painting. Most painters here are Meth. Its really bad in the midwest. Anyway, the bids ranged from 750 to 3500. I settled on a Vietnam Vet that called himself Vet painting. He was 1100 including paint. It is 1200 square ft. Interior doors and windows that are stained now and and all walls. Kitchen, living room, 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms,3 closets and a two car garage ceiling and minor drywall r/r. He starts Tuesday and I will let you know how he does. I figure not good and I am planning a full day of touch up but for a grandy you cant beat it. I'm sure he will get it close to good enuff.

then thats a whole nother animal, I thought we were talking your house.
Price still seems a little low but an empty house does go alot quicker, but I would still worry about material choices for that price.

Still no way. That is way too low. Materials alone you are talking a good 1/3 of that and he is staining also???
Wow. So please.. take us into the mind of someone who hires a painter. I am interested to see what you wanted, what your thoughts were meeting each.. just the whole deal.

I would do it cheap right now, maybe not that cheap, but I would discount my prices if it was something I could use as rainy day filler. I get tired of setting home when it rains, and all of the interior stuff I schedule has specific dates to do it, I wouldnt mind a little filler work just to be able to get out of the house and I could work on it when I wanted.

I hate being stuck with my wife in the house al day long when it rains. I have never think about taking razor blades to my wrists and throat till I have to stay inside with my wife for extended periods of time listening to her stupid questions about absolutely nothing important. I might even pay Blue to LET me come paint that damn house of his if he was closer and I could do it on a rainy day to get away..
Understand man.. understand..

I would have been 2400ish on it.

I could see that for sure. Minimum 2400 for all that and you still supply the paint and primer.

Yea, I guess that's about par for what investors to pay for painting.
I charge more and the investors provide materials, but I have built relationships with my customers.

UGH, what a hell of an outlook. At least you knew you were hiring cheap and expect the problems to come out of it.

Ok, met with painter at noon today to sign contract. He said he expects full payment at the end and he knows where I live. I don't live in that house and it is completely empty.
On the way out of the house he said, "Now we are not doing any of the doors, right?" I said yes you are doing all 8 doors and three bifolds. It says it in the contract I just signed." He says, "Oh yeah, I just forgot."
So it's off to a good start! He will start at 'first light' tomorrow. BTW, he is using Porter Paints!!! This is a regional paint store considered by nearly everyone as the best locally. The cheapest thing in there is 40 bucks a gal!!

The cheapest thing on the floor might be $40 a gallon, but trust me they got some stuff in the back room that is cheaper. It is the same with every store.
SW doesnt put Promar 700 out but they have it in the back, just like Glidden has Speedwall. The stuff out front is the good stuff, and they overprice it so when a HO comes in they can claim to give them the contractor price when they knock $3 or $4 off, the HO thinks he is slick and the store is still selling the crap for $10 more a gallon then any contractor actually pays.

Update.
The guy is almost done. He worked until about 7pm Tues-Fri. He is good with the brush. Doesn't tape anything! So far everthing looks good and professional. Cut ins are crisp and no slop on the glass or oak floors. He will be back Monday to finish up.
He is 61, Vietnam vet. He said he spent most of his early days in the painters union in California where brushes only were allowed. No rollers or sprayers-brush only! So he is old school but I'm not in a time crunch.
He said as soon as he gets enough for some sort of shop table saw he will retire from house paiting and only build furniture. Good guy.

Dang, brush painting walls and ceilings is hard core.
ModernStyle
June 28th, 2010, 08:55 PM
I use tape, it is easier and faster for me to tape off the trim then to cut it in twice. You would be suprised by how many painters cant tape. Not that they are so good at cutting in that they dont need tape, but that they have no idea how to do it properly so that a slight breeze doesnt blow it off or paint doesnt get under it.
I can tape off the trim in a 12x12 room usually in less then 5 minutes, I cant cut at a downward angle that fast. Mutiple coats make me want to tape even more, why cut it in twice when I can tape it once and fly through both coats.
I dont tape crown, I can cut at an upward angle very fast, and only weirdo's tape off ceilings.
I like to talk with old time painters, but I hate working with them. I dont know if it is the same for every trade, but old painters are too set in their ways. They always want to do things the way they did years ago. They make fun of you for only having a 3 inch brush when they used 6 inch back in the day, never mind that they cant keep up, they would have blown you away 30 years ago.....
I am ranting a bit .......... sorry.
I am glad you got a decent job for the money Blue.

I'm going to go ahead and give him 1500. He worked until 730 again tonight. He said he will be back in the morning to touch up here and there after he takes his wife to her chemo treatments.
They got the carpet in today and my concrete guy will be out tommorow to throw in some new sidewalks and patio. The son of a beetch lanscaper bent me over tho. He was to do the sod, tree trimming, and some dirtwork and start tommorow. He called tonight and said he underbid it and asked for more money. So now I have to shop for a landscaper at the 11th hour and these guys are all cloaked in gold chains and jet skis this time of year.
Who said flippin was easy?
