What do you guys do with windows in tiled tub surrounds?

Up untill now I've used glass block.

I'm looking for a solution for folks that want to replace the window, but do not want to pay for reframing, siding repair and glass block. Any ideas on how to do this and waterproof it?

I've done them with aluminum frames, nailing fins and buried in the paper wire cement underlay. Lots of caulking. Don't quite know how to do it without framing and all the other things you mentioned.

Don't forget to order it tempered. :laugh3:

what about a vinyl window

My OP sucks, what I mean is I need to waterproof it from the inside. It's just that every bathroom I work on with a window in the surround results in a nasty moldy nightmare down below. I just want to seal it properly to the tile inside. Caulking joints need maintenance that does not seem to get done over the years.

Ya, no way around some framing/siding repair. I just meant I want to keep the same RO and buy a window so I can piece the siding back together and not completely reframe as I need to do for glass block. Often the siding I'm dealing with is from the 60's or 70's with no way to match it.

Here is my feeling on this.

I have used a company that builds and bands a nice glass block unit for the penny pinchers. It is good but not a great solution.

For the past 3 or 4 years I have been telling the client that I wont accept the job unless I eliminate the opening. It is impossible to match the brick but thats just the way the cookie crumbles.

I have not and never will try to flash and caulk any type of window operable or fixed.

Thank you for reading.

Add proper sloping, Kerdi & custom sized glass block window like Blue stated

You can go with the first two only, but you will have major issues with wood & steel windows - vinyl depends on the window & your attention to detail

Get a custom NC vinyl window, trim out the inside with PVC trim and make sure any water that gets behind it empties to the face of the tile by flashing and creating a path for water.

I have been using the Marvin's that are fiberglass on the inside and outside.

A little bit of Kerdi and Kerdi Fix and you are good to go.

I installed kerdi in my bathroom and used pvc trim to flush out the window. it worked really well. I ran the membrane right up to the trim and overlaid the tile to it. Caulked it up and have had no problems what so ever. Love those schluter products. Wish I had known about their trim pieces I would have used them instead of caulking in the corners and at the tub. I would not doubt they would even have a piece to use at the window trim.

Check their trim section and see if that would help you out.

I've used vinyl windows and returned the tile, tile substrate and the waterproof membrane to the window, caulked the joint of the waterproof membrane to the window with 3M Marine 5200 Adhesive/Sealant (Kerdi fix if I'm using Kerdi).

On the sill I bevel the tile substrate and the tile toward the shower.

I also use windows with a a good weep system to the exterior and brass operating parts such as rollers. (Harvey)

My window doesn't have a sill at all. So it was very easy to lap the Kerdi and the tile right over the edge of the window. Its better if you can shove the window in toward the tile so the tile wind up edging or lapping the window frame. Then cap the outside up nice.

By sill I meant the sill framing, not a stool.

Thanks for all the reply's. I think I'll price with a tempered vinyl window, RO wrapped into cement board with Kerdi, Kerdi Fix and tile to window.

I am interested in the custom glass block inserts and will look into that for the future.
