Got a small job going. Built in bookcase and a mantle. Because of the pain in the butt install I decided to fit them and then finish them. Then the install will just be plop and screw.
The bookcase is by far the harder of the installs. It is a wall to wall and there is a brick wrap around on one of the sides. The client needed to cut a level line in the bricks as it was way out. He also did the brick veneer. As you can see, a few fell off while I was doing my install. Barely even touched them. He had one fall off when he was cutting the line too. Dry joint.
The fitting took almost an hour. Everything was cramped and the cabinet was 1 1/2" from the ceiling so moving it around was tricky too. Got it nice and tight, scraped some paint on the top of the wall.
The mantle was a bit tricky to put up. All these are getting a lacquer paint and there is no real good way to touch it up. So I devised a way that I think will work out nicely.
I used 3/8" x 3" dowels. I drilled 5 holes in the back of the mantle and took one dowel and cut it short and used my drill and a belt sander to put a point on it. Pop it in the hole and push it onto the wall, it sits on top of the brickwork. Did that 4 more times. Drilled a 3/16" pilot hole then the 3/8" hole. I did the two outside ones first and fit it, worked great. I just lined up the other three to see if they would line up, they did. I will put those in on the final install.
I lined up the corbels and marked their place. Used pocket screws from the rear to attach them. The apron will get attached the same way or maybe with just glue. Marked for the apron. Packed it up and brought the stuff back tot he shop.
The bookcase doesn't have its back on right now for ease of install and the lower section has to mission style doors.
