Looking for an antique dresser for my wife and ran into a nice solid walnut piece. This is a side picture of one of the drawers. I've never see a joint that looked like this!
Anyone know if there's a name for it or is it original to the craftsman that made it?

It's called a Knapp joint. AKA Scallop and Dowel.
Invented by Charles B. Knapp of Waterloo Wisconsin.
Dates the piece no older than the late 1860's.

It's in one of my cabinetry books. I happened to read that as recently as a couple of years ago.
It was the first viable machine made alternative to hand cut dovetails.
I'll bet Leo can cut Knapp joints by hand faster than he can rout dovetails with a Leigh jig. :mad2:
