What does it mean to tag your posts, how does it help and how do you do it?

it is for searches dave. there is also a way that with the right tagging and thread... you could actually have your business come up in a specific search on Google or other search engines. It isn't necessarily spamming, but if done right, and with a level headed thread.. it could help people find you or your business on the web. Think an interactive blog.. in forum form.

So would I just use the 'edit tags' button and type in whatever or do they have to link to something?
Type slow for me.
Thanks.

Yes, just type in some keywords. I did a few:)
If you click on one of the tags, it will show you all threads with those tags.

Thanks Chris. Nates o.k., but sometimes he just types too fast and I don't understand.

O.K. bear with me here. I'm trying to understand.
These tags appear on my counter top thread, "clients, course, job, kitchen, retrofit, tips". Are these automatic or does someone add them?

Tags are words that link to threads (on forums) or posts (on blogs) that also have that tag. You can have multiple tags per post.
For example:
If you start a thread about your new mobile phone.
Title: Check this out
Content: I just got my new Droid X and love it. The coverage is awesome too.
Not much for keywords in that post so tags could help it be found. I might add the following tags:
Tags: Cell phone,Verizon, Android,
This is another way to group/search/categorize content. If I search for Android phone, the above example thread would not come up in search, but with the tags you can find it and one similar to it.
Try out our tag system on the forum, under Search - Advanced, On the Blog, bottom right of sidebar.
You can add tags to threads you create here on the forum, but we do not allow any of Your business names as tags. Please use subject in content for tags. I have also allowed some Brand Name tags as that would be something a visitor/member may want to find info about.

Yes, there is an automatic thread tagging mechanism on this forum. It does an OK job, but usually better when a human adds/edits them.

sorry dave. I have a problem. It is that by the time my thought gets to my fingertips I have lost interest in what I am writing. sorry. Hard to get my thoughts out sometimes.
It is for searches. In the larger scheme of things, it can help your site get found, your biz get found, you get more work.

Slight semantic difference, but I think it's worth clarifying.
Tags are to help users find Content - Which is exactly what Search engines want to display to users, the most relevant Content.
If you randomly create useless tags just to get links into and around your site, it will likely not help or hurt your rankings. If you create relevant ones, it's win win.
