So now that we have a place to clown around, what about a place to keep things serious? A place where we can expect to get straight answers with no BS, a place where we can expect to post a question and get good input without all the funny stuff?
I like this forum and love the fact that we can fool around a bit. But what about an intellectual section where your safe from flaming and BS?:smash:

We are going to roll out a few more Business sub headings in thunderdome and a few more for trade specific questions.
You mean like that??

I'm interested. Could you give a couple examples, and intended audience (if sounds like a stupid question, not intended to be; I've been preaching either to myself or the converted for years...)

All I'm talking about is a place where we can expect to have a civilized conversation about a topic.
I don't want to think about creating a whole boring forum that isn't fun; JLC already has that under control, lol! I'm thinking of a safe place, that's all. No drifting, no foolishness, just professionalism. Create an archive of such things, make it public, expect to have your silly responses deleted if it's not on topic. A section that we can all be proud of, without the usual weird responces mixed in.

That's the purpose of thunder dome.
If you go in there and pull up any of the serious topics they have pretty much stayed on topic.
I have deleted well over 100 post to date to keep the thread flowing and the topics un interrupted.
I just looked at one thread from the first few weeks that I deleted 12 response from it or relocated them to other sections
Other sections I may allow the stray but I will keep that area serious and the questions and replies on topic.

I started a thread about history, got good responses from the loneframer I'd like to see more on, is that the kind of idea? Or on methodology for passing on things guys have learned that can be passed on? No jokes.

I got it
The JW Zone!
Don't be hating, I been working a lot of hours JW.

Ya know what, I really would want to call it the JW Zone, and I'm not joking.
One more thought, you guys should be able to moderate your own topics, that's how I see it.
Lets see how Rory's thing works first.

Rory,
I've noticed the clean up you do and I'm not trying to take anything away from you on that. Just thinking we could have a public discussion and present ourselves as professionals in the right section. Thunderdome should remain private and it should also come with it's privileges. A public section to promote a professional atmosphere would be healthy for the forum and our businesses IMPO. Maybe I think too much..............

I'm up for that; I'd be happy to suppport any thread JasonW starts and moderates. I'd like to see loneframer do the same. I do see a serous problem though. I saw at least two items in Paul's post there I hate to pass up a change to comment on, I'll be kicked off in no time. I can try.
(I was referring to seeing humour in everything, not everyone appreciates it, can be seen as lacking respect if not done right).

OK, Rory and I will consider this, and the JW Zone might be a good thing.
We need a little time I think, Rory and I talk more than we do with our families right now.
Do this Jason, you put an outline together for us and send it to Rory.
Will that work for now?

I understand and I try to move anything off topic or threads that don't belong in the main forum into any other sections that it does belong in.
For now it is easy to do but as the membership base grows it will be harder.
The idea of the basement was for all the off topic post to have a place to go and leave the rest of the forum as a place to discuss business, trade and general questions.
The new sub forms will also help keep discussions on topic by having more headings to post related topics in
Your not thinking to much we are on the same page.
It will take some time to iron out the kinks but so far I think its been heading in the right direction.
I have kept Modern occupied and in the board room for 2 days now.

I agree, public helps the most, presents a positive image and a body of constructive (pun) discussion that you could proudly direct your niece in high school to for a school project on, or business associate with a bit of class. I don't think allour best thinking should be behind closed doors.
one man's perspective only.

I can handle whatever you shoot my way, I will consider your suggestions to my person and work to better myself.
And then kick you out!

I don't think kicking folks off is the right thing to do; just expect that an off topic comment won't be there in the morning. We can all have fun, and need to in order to keep our sanity. I'd like to leave a great impression on the public; ya know, the people spending the money or giving the leads.

I like that idea, Jason. A sort of professional DIY, is that where you're going with it? Also if it's out in the open, it might draw the newbies and lurkers out there.

I never cared much for the public, it seems to be made up of assholes, but I will respect the serious threads as much as an inbred from Indiana can.
:surrender:Arent they the ones that pay your bills?!!!

There will be some more section rolling out that will be trade specific threads and open to the public. It takes some time to get these sections open and set up.
But we are going to get to these in a few weeks. The sections will have picture posts sections as well.
We have to move to different server soon so give us some time

Rory,
Please don't think I'm railroading the purpose of this forum; I think you guys have it perfect. I'm only suggesting a public section where we can all shine as professionals. I think it would do us all well.
Thunderdome is private and should be fun.

No I get what your saying. The hardest part so far has been naming the new sections.
We have ideas for a carpentry, historical, green, painting interior design, kitchen and bath sections.
We are just putting all the little pieces together right now.
We want those sections exposed to the public so they can see our craftsmanship and have discussions about the projects and techniques amongst each other as well.

I think this forum will be a great success. It's almost exactly like Billy's forum other than the fact that its well executed, has members, has great topics, brings members of the trades and non trades members together, offers great information and blogs, is updated regularly, has a purpose and a goal, is easy to navigate, combines serious talk with off topic humor, and is run by people who have a clue and are actually contractors.

I like the idea that professionals related to our trades get to see us present in articulate, welll spoken manner, and that we don't need anyone to speak for us. I've seen too much of people publish about trade issues something that looks glossy, but is only patched together from elsewhere, poorly arrived at conclusions, etc. you guys are quite capable of proving otherwise.

There is serious stuff all over this forum but if the public can't see a lot of it, what is the impression they will get? I am sure there are more than a few people reading the posts here who have not registered. An open section with lots of good material will be great in attracting new members and help show the public that not all of us are painters.
Sorry. :rolleyes3:
Jason, I like your idea, now we just have to bribe Paul and Rory to get it done quickly.

I think Rory mentioned that there would soon be a carpentry sub-forum. That's a start toward getting us all out the secret treehouse.
