of the week, month whatever.
You are wanting something positive .
A basic need for people is to be well thought of.
Every week amongst the jokes and such there are a few nuggets that tend to stand out. How about an area listing the best Best Post Of the Week. Similiar in qualifying as a different honor with members nominating and voting. Maybe one for original content and one for best or most relevant link.
Could this give visitors a positive view of RC, as well as a reason to come back on a regular basis?
I realize that there are probably a thousand reasons why this won't work with current structure, but would it be benificial?
Bottom line might it upgrade the quality of posts, that you are looking for?
Just an idea.....

And I did really mean that Len, you've been helpful to me in the past, and it's appreciated.

Ideally the post would be one that is the most helpful to a h/o, when you start getting more h/o's joining.

I'm not quite clear on why it would be desirable to have homeowners join RC.
What is the motive behind that?

They need help too - combined there is a great wealth of knowledge here.
Members will benefit by knowing what homeowners are asking, what are there concerns and maybe pick up a job here or there.
It will benefit the RC and industry as a whole to see a good open dialog between the various sides. Hopefully break down some of those stereotypes from both sides.

No worries, he operates in short bursts.
On the subject of homeowners, Helping them helps the RC website. More members makes the place more attractive to advertisers. And it's just plain good to help folks out.
And with enough HO members it could be an indicator to help us market to them. Between the dome and the basement there is plenty of room for contractor (and sophomoric)only stuff.
Good Luck

Not sure if home owner is the market for best post because a lot of the good posts are in the business section, not visible to them. Poses the same issues as my website. If I make it consumer driven, I lose the cabinetmakers. Don't know if we can have it both ways. Who is our target market?

While I think the intent is admirable, I'm not so sure I see how this would work. When you say help you are suggesting that I give away my expertise for free. I run a business, not a non profit.
My blanket advice to a homeowner is to hire a competent, licensed, insured contractor.
I'm not trying to be insulting when I say that. I just think that if you are trying to attract professional contractors, offering them the opportunity to do consulting for free is not going to be a big draw.
As KornerKing said, I don't think you can have it both ways.

I'm pretty much in agreement, but since RC is wanting to try a different route, I'm interested to see how it would work out.
I do believe that most of the "contractor" areas need to be "private" then, and I'm not talking about the boardroom.

Most areas of the forum are already private meaning you have to be a contractor and prove it to be admitted. Thunderdome is one area the boardroom is another.
Set your computer so it does not automatically sign you in and look at what you see.
completely differant than when signed in.

Can I get a blinking, neon glow around my screen, when I'm posting in an area that might be a little more "sensitve" than others?

Guess I should stop giving everybody free website and SEO advice here too.
So if that is true then all DIY and other thousands of sites that post construction how-to's, techniques etc. are taking business from contractors?
Simply not true. If someone posts a question to a forum, asks a Home Depot employee etc. looking for advice, they have already decided not to hire someone and do it themselves.
You can only benefit by educating and putting yourself out there as a pro.
It will come around. Either you will build a reputation as a pro and/or people that you have given advice to in the past will respect you for it and likely contact you first when they are in need of services.
Even if your opinion is 'that job really requires a professional', the opinion would be appreciated.
No different than exchanging from contractor to contractor. Do you think everyone here should be charging for their replies in Thunderdome?
I have posted in forums giving advice and telling people exactly what they need to do for their website/SEO etc. Around 50% of those have turned into paying jobs at some point. Of which 100% would have likely not have even heard of me otherwise.
That's how I met The Paul (who lives 30 miles from me).

I'm a 'quick poster'
When I post I try to get right to the point.
I'm pretty open minded and just post my opinion.
A lot of times that can come off as rude. I don't mean to be.
Don't take anything from me too personal, just putting my opinion or observations out there.

I'm not going to try to tell you how to run your business, but that is exactly what I would do. My skills are a marketable commodity and if I give them away then I lower their value.
So if that is true then all DIY and other thousands of sites that post construction how-to's, techniques etc. are taking business from contractors?
I'm not saying that, but these sites are largely for amatuers and someone is making money on them.

A pro is by definition someone who makes their livelyhood at something.
Even if your opinion is 'that job really requires a professional', the opinion would be appreciated.

If I thought that had some marketing value for me I would agree with you, but honestly Len I don't see the ROI in that for me. My market is constrained by geography, your's isn't. I see the value in it for you. Me..not so much.
I also understand the free ethic that is inherant in the internet. I was on the net before www and .com existed. Back when you weren't allowed to carry on any commercial activity whatsoever.
I don't buy the notion that information should be free, even contractor to contractor. I think the contractor sections should be subscription.
I back this up by paying my $7 every month by automatic debit to RC.
I am not embarrassed to charge for what I do, nor do I find it immoral.
If someone is remodeling their home they are increasing the value and equity in that property why would they expect to get that for free?
On the other hand I donate a lot of work to charitable organizations. I just don't view a homeowner as a charity.

Kinda like when they tried to set up a whore house in our town. Went broke in a hurry cause the locals were giving it away for free.

Nothing wrong with that...but your future posts will be allowed only in the "Boardroom" section, and that will be contingent on getting the O.K. by Rory, on each individual post. (don't use big words)

There are many ways to look at it. I consider welcoming homeowners as a way to educate people. If a homeowner is bent on doing a job themselves they will find the information somewhere. You are not going to stop them so you might as well give them accurate information so they don't flub it up too bad.
Many times people will put a job off or hire it out once they realize all of the technicalities involved. And I believe most HO questions will be smaller things like installing a toilet.
