In the debate over replacing old windows versus repairing and/or reinforcing them, replacement usually wins. How much easier is it, after all, to find a company that will happily replace your windows, usually with a significant profit upside, than to find one that will painstakingly remove, rerope and otherwise repair and reinstall them?

Serious Materials, Empire State Building window refurbishment Yesterday wrapped up the mother of all window-repair projects, and the results could get at least some owners of homes and commercial structures to think differently about their old windows. All 6,514 windows (and some 26,000 panes of glass) of the Empire State Building have been refurbished in a process that reused 96 percent of the existing glass and frames.The work was performed in a "dedicated processing center" on site at the building.

$4.5 million window job that would have been over $16 million if replaced. Pretty nice savings.
