As a woman in the construction industry is there obstacles that you run into?
Do you feel that being a woman helps or hinders your progress in the field
What makes you good at what you do?

Hello, Rory, You asked me to register to say hello and introduce myself. I have a business getting permits for contractors but I do a great deal more than that. Over the years I have learned the codes, taken classes on construction and learned all aspects of jurisdictional control over the building in the metropolitan Atlanta area.
The only thing that I find baffling is when a client calls me for information and then they call the jurisdiction when they don't like the answer, but that is not really a reflection on me.
I am good at what I do because I am detail oriented and I never, never, never give up. Also, my clients know that I won't lie to them nor will I lie for them and that means that the government officials know that they can trust me--so they will work with me to the client's benefit.
I haven't felt that being a woman has hindered my progress in my chosen field, but that doesn't mean that I haven't run slap up against obstacles in my career. Starting my own business cleared up many of those pesky obstacles.

Welcome to RC
I use expeditors for many of my jobs in DC. The job would be time consuming for me some times a permit, especially can take months to acquire. How do you charge for your service?
Flat fee? hourly? hybrid of both?

Hello and welcome.
Interesting business you have. So many home owners don't understand what a hassle it can be getting all the right paperwork completed and approved.

Gentlemen, Thank you for your welcomes. Len, homeowners don't understand what it takes to get a permit and their position often is that they own their house and property and they should be able to do what they want. It is difficult for them to understand that they have to abide by zoning laws and overlay districts and don't get me started about the required surveys and the stamped drawings. Unless homeowners are prepared in some way, they do not understand.
Pricing depends on the job and the number of departments that I have to visit. If it is a ground up project I can charge a percentage of the cost of construction or if the job is in a conceptual stage I will charge an hourly fee. Jurisdictions factor into the pricing as well. The less complicated ones cost less and my returning clients get more favorable rates because they know what I need in the drawing sets and provide them up front.
Tomorrow is our WINN meeting. I will mention your forum to the group!

Hopefully the other women in your organizations will visit the site and chime in. One of the biggest things me and Paul notice was the lack of input from women in the Construction business
We both have great female subs, designers, lighting specialist etc.
But not enough of them voice there opinions on Construction matters or become leaders of groups that shape the industry.
The numbers and roles are growing in numerous organizations, but how can we help the women embrace the business more and feel more active
How can we get them to play a more substantial role?
The Perminator
July 28th, 2009, 09:10 PM
Rory, you and Paul need to ask your subs if they belong to professional organizations and ask them if they would like to join yours. We have great women leaders in NARI, HBA and NKBA in Atlanta and they are women who have been in the business for many many years. Also, see if you have a NAWIC chapter in the area and visit them. Ask them if they would like to come to your meetings.

Good suggestion and I am not dismissing it but I see how they handle or respond to the women at the local meetings. No one talks about it but they are not treated as equals.
A lot of the guys have the mentality that ooh that just a girl talking or she a woman what does she know about construction, very few of them break through that barrier
The Perminator
July 28th, 2009, 09:36 PM
That is why it would be a good idea for you to attend their meetings on their turf. It would behoove you to speak up for these women at your meetings and others would follow your example. Yes, a lot of guys do have the mentality that girls know nothing about construction, but you know better, don't you? I know as a woman how hard it is to walk into that meeting with all those guys the very first time and other women I have spoken with had the same experience. That didn't stop us, though! Ten years ago when I walked into my first NARI meeting the president greeted me and introduced me to some other members. That single act made all the difference. It looks as though you could make the difference to women in construction in your area.

Woman in the group make it more complete.
I would like to see the woman form their own agenda and be invited, also I would be for allowing the woman to moderate, actually they would have too.
Men in a group (if they wanted) and Thunderdome for all.
You can form private groups now.
Men that wear snakeskin cowboy boots for example.

I am going to a barbeque tomorrow tomorrow that an associate is having, it will be more woman than men.
Also the person I'm meeting and doing an article on is a friend and president of Mpls NARI, and a woman.
We don't always agree, but we always stay friends.

Did I say 25? (Halter tops should be illegal.) Great, Silvertree! Enjoy the barbecue! Who is the president of the Mpls NARI? Is that a large chapter? I heard somewhere that the midwest NARI's have a lot of members. Maybe at the national meeting last April. Our WINN group volunteered for that event. I talked about Remodel Crazy at the WINN meeting and someone recognized Ed the Roofer! Small world!

Halter tops should be legal. "That is our first argument"
Thanks for the mention at the group I hope the women visit and like what they see. We really want them to feel at home here.

The president is Stacey Quinn, a very capable person and fun to hang with.
We have about 430 members, almost half contractors and half associates. A very active group with 200 to 300 showing up for meetings.
We have a few woman contractors and many associates that are woman, who knows the exact numbers? Its a friendly crowd and pretty lively. All the meetings are catered.
Our next spotlight member on Remodel Crazy will be the mother/ daughter appliance sales owners of MJ's contract appliance. Monique is one of our NARI directors and is a great person to have for a friend. She joined RC a few days ago.

Why does that surprise you?
One way or another, my name usually surfaces amongst a meeting of women.
I am internationally famous, or is that infamous?
Actually, in the next 1-2 months, I am going to be the featured contractor in a national roofing publication. :builder2:
They used to choose 1 contractor per month, then layed off from it since last December, probably because everyone else was already chosen and realized their mistake by omitting my bio and profile.
They expect the female readership to soar upon that publication, or so I am told.
