Finally installed that bow front vanity... It looks great, but I think I made about $10/hr on the damned thing... It was my first try at making curved doors and faceframes.
It's hard to see the curved front in the photo's taken straight-on, so I put in a picture taken while it was still sitting on my workbench...

Nice! How did you curve the rails and stiles, band sawn pieces or what?
And does the curved door present any special issues with the hinges?

Ran rough 4/4 stock through the bandsaw, then the planer. Kept 'em shy of 1/4" thick. Stacked 4 pieces together in a form with lotsa glue. (bent lamination)

Last time I did a curved piece it was for the back rail of a chair I was making.
I steam bent the damn thing. It worked, but it was a lot of work.

There's a picture somewhere on RC of a jig I made for steam bending 4 1/2" maple base moulding.... I ruined many feet of that stuff before I broke down and had it made out of resin... I should have done that from the beginning... I was worried the stain match would suck, but it had a bit of a grain imprinted on it that really made a close match... Pricey stuff though...

Alright, this isnt CT... let's talk #'s... What would you think this should go for? 18wx21d 3 drawer stacks on either side, shaker door style, Blum undermount softclose slides. Curved 36" center cab 2 doors functioning, 2 (slab) drawerfronts fixed.
Maple veneer ply for the carcass, solid cherry faceframes and doors/drawers, solid soft maple drawerboxes, dovetailed.
Finish is ML Campbell clear stain base, then Traditional Cherry. Vinyl sealer, and 2 coats of catalyzed Conversion Varnish.

If I had to guess the three cabinets alone would be 5-6K sans everything else involved

you can get someone to pay $6k for three cabinets? I cant... The two drawer stacks are not curved, just plain flat nothing special. It took me a day to make each one.
The center cabinet is curved, and that's what took me so damned long. Now that I've done it, I know the next one would take less than half the time. I wasted a solid day just staring at cut up pieces Im sure.

For custom work pretty much all day long!

On average I get about $1000 per cabinet when I am doing kitchens.

Im still not confident enough in my woodworking abilities to charge those prices... I see it like this. If I could find a homeowner willing to pay those prices, I think they would expect absolute perfection. I could probably find a half dozen tiny flaws in this piece... things so small that no one would ever really notice, but I know they're there.
I agreed to build this for $2500 and planned on outsourcing the two doors. I was having a difficult time finding a company that would make them, and those that would had ridiculous lead times. The doors are what had me scratching my head for days... Once they were done, the rest fell into place. If I had to build this again, I would charge $3500 and be content with the money made.

My woodworking projects are often a small part of a remodel job. In this case, I remodeled a bathroom and then built this vanity for it..

Quick question. First of all great work. I wouldn't even attempt it so I tip my hat to you. My question is this and it might ruffle feathers but I have to know.
You could have gone to Lowes and ordered the exact setup from Kraftmaid for thousands cheaper. Why not just do that and take the stickers off and brand your name onto it?

That would be dishonest. And Alex is the most honest guy I know.

Well, shit... NOW you tell me???
No feathers ruffled... Can you actually get a bow-front cabinet like that from Kraftmaid? I havent seen it.
Woodworking was always a hobby, so I enjoy being able to get paid for playing in the shop... Most other hobbies have been put on the back burner since Lina popped out two rugrats, so this keeps me sane.

If it makes you happy and you enjoy doing it then there is more income than just money. don't downplay the value of psychic income which can be worth more than money keep up the good work:2thumbsup:
