View Full Version : Question for painters?

I looked at a home a few weeks ago and part of the work scope is to paint the wood on the stucco.

Fake Tudor Style, previous contractor nailed cedar over the stucco (right on top). It is painted, looks like latex.
I say acrylic primer after a hand wash and scrub, then a coat of duration and no caulking of the edges.

Any opinions?

:laugh3:Like I have to ask if a painter has an opinion.:laugh3:

is it that bad of shape that it needs primer? Duration would fine by itself but I am sure SW guys could elaborate more..
I would use Aura personally (but I am a BM guy) and if its not in that bad of shape wash and paint.

What Decoman said.
Spot-prime if necessary.
I like the Aura too, but Duration should be fine.

Its going to be awfully hard to keep the edges of the wood from peeling. If the stucco paints I would caulk it, specifically the top edge of the horizontal boards. I agree with the other painters. Don't bother priming unless its down to raw wood. 2 coats of 100% acrylic will be fine.

Bare wood on top edge only. Acrylic primer.

If you caulk those edges I believe moisture will stay behind the boards, maybe caulk the top but not the bottom. Its a dash finish, you caulk that and it will be thick in places.

I Googled Aura, BM seems to think its the best exterior available. I like BM and when I started out that was the only paint my boss would use. $60 retail a gallon is worth it if it covers good.

Duration is OK, I did a carraige house and the painters used Duration over cedar, no primer and it peeled in less than 2 years. Homeowner hired the painters so it wasn't a problem for me.

The fake Tudors we have done over the years were never caulked where the cedar hits the stucco, so we have never caulked them... Coverage is good with aura as is color retention. All tho I know a lot guys have a problem with the price...

Price is relative to performance, I think $60 retail and less work is a deal.

My opinion over Duration vs Aura. I would go with Aura. Better product and I think better durability. I used both and am not impressed with Duration and never recommend it to any of my customers.

Paul, look at Hirshfields Platinum exterior--great performance, no primer needed, about $15 savings per gallon over Aura.

Going to Hirshfields tomorrow, thanks.
