Tiling your bathroom countertops is one of the best investments you can make to an outdated bathroom. Not only will you add value to your home but you will save money also. Tiling a bathroom countertop is not a difficult project. This article will instruct you on how to tile a bathroom countertop.

How to Tile a Bathroom Countertop

1. Cut plywood the shape of the countertop. Use 1-inch woods screws to secure the plywood to the countertop. Cut an opening for the sink.

2. Cut the tiles according the assembly guide that came with the tiles.

3. Prepare the mortar according to the directions on the bag. Thoroughly mix the mortar until there are no lumps.

4. Spread thinset over the countertop with a notch trowel.

5. Apply the tiles starting at the back corner on the countertop. Press the tiles firmly.

6. Apply thinset to the walls on the countertop. You should stop 1 inch from the end of the tile. Allow the thinset to dry for 2 hours.

7. Mix the grout according to the directions on the package. Clean any leftover thinset from the countertop and walls.

8. Apply the grout across the entire countertop using a grout float. Wipe away any extra grout with a damp sponge. Allow the grout to dry for 2 hours.

9. Clean the countertop with clean water and a sponge. Use a cheesecloth to buff the countertop after the grout has dried.

10. After 24 hours, apply tile sealant over the wall and countertop. Allow the sealant to dry and wipe the area clean with a cloth.

That works, spec' builder around here would do them like that all the time, only difference longer screws and waterproofing membrane and maybe more time before grout

Personally I thought it sounded like a complete hack job.

I know tile directly over plywood is considered minimally acceptable, but I can't quite imagine a situation where there isn't a superior alternative.

I also would not install a countertop in a bathroom without some type of waterproofing.

I guess I should just be happy he didn't suggest mastic instead of thin-set.

Highly doubtful.

Unless ,as Nap points out, you combined it with shag carpeting and marketed the house to a refugee from the 70s.
