Sherwin Williams, Hirshfields, Bennie Moore top of the line products only.

Is self priming paint something I can honestly tell a customer?

Only talking about their best stuff.

I'm not ready to be a guinea pig yet. I did ask about it at SW and was told that it was fine for touch ups and small spots but better to actually prime a whole wall or room still.

But we only paint reluctantly anyway.

Good Luck

i think when they say self priming it means 3 coats

first coat is considered the ''primer''

The biggest problem you face is warranty. If the does fail prematurely, paint stores are only going to foot the bill for new materials. Not labor.
And trying to make a poor job right is a lot more work then doing it right the first time.

I bought primer, the guy vat the paint store said I didn't need it with Hirshfield Platinum.

I don't believe him.

dont think its a poor job, most of the self primers are in the 50$ a gallon range

maybe for the newer paint formulations the best primer may actually be the paint itself

We have used Aura on some overhead doors jambs the last two seasons with out priming the bare spots we scraped we'll see if it holds up. I did as a test.. I have not bought in the idea completely.

Hirshfields Platinum $52.99 a gal.

I pay $43.00 on account, started 22 years ago as a fire water guy and wore out a couple Graco sprayers, made in Mpls so parts were easy to get.

Still have the account even though I rarely paint.

You guys teach me stuff too! I painted my boudoir lavender - and will need to 'tone it down' before I put my house on the market on day. I know it is going to be a ______ to prime/paint. 16 foot cathedral ceilings which I painted all by myself.

It ain't perfect, but I did it myself. :2thumbsup:
* which is why there is a throw rug in between bathroom/bedroom as I fell off the ladder and spilled paint on the carpet.

This is my husbands reply, (in an Antonio Banderas voice)
"You must choose the correct material for each area. Like beautiful women, each "face" is different. You must apply the proper "foundation" before adding the "blush" and other cosmetic finishes"
Sometimes I worry about him!:)

My SW rep told me that Duration is self priming, just put on an extra coat .........
Duration is about $50 a gallon, my usual exterior primer is around $20 per gallon ........
I am trying to see how this is a good deal for me but so far I just dont see it .......

It's a ploy to sell more paint at 50 bucks a gallon.

umm because if you don't put a tinted primer on you will have two coats of duration over your 20$ primer.

We did a rough cedar home in which the primer was not tinted and you were two coating it. Even if the primer is tinted some times it has to be pretty close for complete coverage over it.

Duration is self priming depending on what you are putting it on, So is Master hyde ceiling paint Do i recommend this to my customers this NO way. Do it right the first time its cheaper and easier.

I hate tinted primer, makes it hard to tell if everything is fully coated.

Everything I do gets 2 finish coats, doesnt matter if the primer is tinted or not. To get the desired mil thickness, the true sheen and the true color takes 2 coats. Maybe thats why I dont use Duration too often, HO's dont want to pay $50 a gallon for 2 coats.
If a HO wants only one top coat then I tell them that there will be no warranty, that usually makes them want that second coat.
