I installed the new router they gave me.(My ISP). Made sure everything was hooked up like it should be. Now the wireless is timing out and saying I have limited access. Everything seams to be running fine. I have rebooted numerous times and it only seams to happen when I am streaming video.

With the new speed I have with my ISP I would have thought that it would be fast enough to stream wireless. Is that not the case?

Here is my Speed test

Here is my ping test

I thought they where both pretty impressive. Maybe I am wrong? You guys see anything that stands out?

I have downloaded movies and pushing 14 mbps on download time.

Could be your browser. Mines running a bit slower than usual but it could have something to do with running the new FF 4 Beta. It's still in the testing stages.

Here is a new one. Never thought about it being a browser problem. But why would it tell me the connectivity to my modem is out? Its windows telling me that not my browser? Or do you think its bogging down and windows thinks its a connection problem?

Try changing channels on your router. You may be experiencing some interference.
If you have a wifi enabled smart phone (there are windows apps as well) download a wifi analyzer to show you nearby networks and what channels they are operating on, then pick an open one.

You should have more than enough to stream.
I have one step above the base package and this is mine While streaming video on another computer.

Rogers, according to Netflix recently released stats, has one of the most consistent high speed connections to them.

I just signed up to their 3rd tier service. 120 gig download limit and blistering fast down loads. Supposed to have up to 25 mbps download speed. I may have to give them a call and see why I am not getting that. I have to check it again later but I will download that program. Thanks Len.

Do you have on you would recommend Len? I looked at a few but I am nervous about some of the sites. They look all scary and stuff. LOL

Maybe your ISP is throttling your connection because you stream too much data?

Wow Len thats a great program. I downloaded the top one you posted. My system is showing that my internet is a solid yellow line all the way across. All the others it picks up are up and down like a jack rabbit.

Seams I am on a lone channel too. I dropped it down a couple channels when I saw you suggested that. There was one other one on the same one. Maybe thats what was causing that.

As far as the isp throttling it back they are advertising that they don't do that. They actually have a power boost feature they are hyping. And yes I think its just hype. When they have extra band width they will boost your speed for games and video. I think its bull crap.

I will run a vid off CTV's website and look at what it does.

It is wavering a little but not what I would say is outrageous. The other people around me look like spikes and valleys.

Can I ask why I can see everyone's mac addresses? Thats a bad thing right? Could I not take control of their comps through that?

You can see in the graphs from the link I posted earlier Rogers has one of the best data rates. Rated by a third party, serving streaming media, Netflix.

It is fluctuating between -55 to -65 decibels. but about 20 min into the vid the lines went wild and then my laptop told me it lost the connection. The bar that says its connected on the tool bar said it had limited connectivity and I had to disconnect and reconnect. while i did that it said it could not connect to my network 2 or 3 times. It finally did connect. Wonder if it could be a problem with the lines outside?

Ok Gave Rogers the info off the program. They said there is no problem with the modem at all or the system outside. I went to the part that has the graph showing the strength of the system and told him what i saw. There are 2 other systems that are jumping up and down like a jack rabbit. told him what decibel mine was at and what theirs was jumping around at. He said basically its their signal cutting through mine. Its a signal that is coming from next door and its wild. So when I am streaming shows I guess I will have to just plug it in. Save some frustration and anger issues. Maybe prevent me throwing my laptop through the window lol.

Thanks Len for recommending that program. I didn't know you could do that. It helped figure out at least what was going on.

Could be interference from many other devices as well. Cordless land line phones, microwave, garage door opener, baby monitor, wireless security cams etc. all operate on the 2.4 ghz spectrum.

Now that you can see some signals around you, try making sure your router channel is farthest away from the interfering routers channel.
You could also try moving your router physically further away from any offending signals.

Or try a 5ghz router, but then you may have to upgrade your wireless cards to take advantage. Dual band routers can operate at 2.4 and 5ghz simultaneous, so if you have equipment that can't easily or affordable be upgraded it will run both.
http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/linksys-wrt610n-simultaneous-dual/4505-3319_7-33132573.html

Or you could plug it in, but this is 2011, right? Now where is our flying car, I could really use one on Friday.

I Hear ya Len. I told the guy from Rogers that My cordless phone system, was 6.0. He said that wouldn't interfere with it. We don't have any other wireless signals in the house so it has to be the Neighbours wireless that is messing it up. Its a lot faster too when I plug it in. I will see what the speed test says plugged in.

Wow what a difference

Here is my new ping test

Wow apparently it isn't that great. But it is in the middle of the day. That may have something to do with it. Plus sudbury could have a bad lines going up there too.

Ok I installed both those tests the same way. Why did one work and the other one not?

Click the Insert Image icon (mountain picture)
Not the Insert Link icon (globe)

Which will open a box to put the url to the image in.
Or you can type in the BBcode manualy.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1192741061.png

There was BB code wrapped around your img code messing it up.

You can click the a/A in the upper right of the editor to switch and show the code.

Ok I think I figured it out. Stupid Rogers software. My Wife came home last night as saw what was going on with this laptop. This morning she says. Hmm sounds like a software conflict. She says I have mine hooked up and it never does that. (She used to have problems with the old modem the slower one.)

I get thinking about it. Hey she's right. This started happening after I installed that software. I take all the crap software out through the control panel. Reboot it and guess what. Not a lick of trouble sense. Not even a hick up. Last time I install that crap.

Yep, that happens. Now I still gotta figure out my problem with my router.

Greg from K/W
March 12th, 2011, 09:24 AM
Have you tried reloading the firmware Leo? Can you run your laptop through the hard wire side? Could be the wireless side is shot or got hit by a power spike.

Greg from K/W
March 12th, 2011, 09:26 AM
Oh the software I took out was called Self Healing Software. Its crap. I think it was interfering with the hardware acceleration as well. I was having problems with all sorts of stuff. Even loading pages got to be infuriating to me. Its 200% better now and is back to normal. Blistering fast. Just the way I like it.

Ok I installed both those tests the same way. Why did one work and the other one not?

I missed this before. 6% packet loss -- That's a big deal, anything streaming will suffer greatly, voip, video, anything that need near real time transfer or packets to be received in order

I get thinking about it. Hey she's right. This started happening after I installed that software. I take all the crap software out through the control panel. Reboot it and guess what. Not a lick of trouble sense. Not even a hick up. Last time I install that crap.

This is the one place I always recommend Microsoft over 3rd party programs.
The built-in Microsoft wireless connection tools almost always produce a better, more stable connection.

All third party wireless cards come with their own connection software (and driver). I always choose custom install and only install the driver and not the connection software. Windows default will give you better results on this one.

Ok its happening again. I really am getting pissed off with this thing. I am going to see about upgrades for the Microsoft wireless or something.

My drivers are up to snuff. (So says Windows driver search) Searched ASUS forums found no problems at all there. Maybe I'm not looking in the right spot.

I have an ASUS N61J laptop with I7 quad
Atheros AR8131 pci network controller/network card. card and controller seam separate.

I have seen others having problems with this but they don't seam to have done as much as I have to figure it out. Such as the Wifi not being turned on. Duh.

It was suggested I uninstall the drivers on this thing and let windows reinstall them when it finds the hardware. I did that. Now it won't fire up my wireless side at all. As far as I can see it did the reinstall and when I go into the hardware it says that the drivers are upto date. I even went in manually and told it what the network is and the password is. I will try it again and see what happens.

Anyone ever send out an email that says, "Enclosed is the estimate?"..........

and then you forget to attach the file

So they have to write you back and say "No attachment."

Then you write them back and say, "Here it is I forgot to attach it to the email."

Damn circle jerk of misery. I'm not a rocket scientist people thats why I chose to work with my hands.

Greg from K/W
March 15th, 2011, 03:37 PM
Yup I have not done that but others have done it to me.

I took out all the drivers restarted and its working now. I will have to see whats going on. See if it cuts out on me again. I was told uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling can make the comp synchronize better with the modem. Not sure if that is true but I trust the source.(My buddy is a network engineer He knows what he is talking about.)

Greg from K/W
March 15th, 2011, 08:46 PM

Guess you need to try a different brand. What do you have?

I just picked up a Cisco LinkSys e2000. So far it is as good or better as my last router. The kids tell me their PS 3 doesn't drop out anymore.

Damn kids suck up all my bandwidth. :censored:

I would turn off the router part of that combo unit and get a separate one. It sounds like that hardware is flaky and it looks like you're going to spend countless hours on it even if you do get it to work for now. That thing will be a huge PIA, mark my words.

I have been streaming the red wings game for a while now with no problems
