Well I finished up the rope mantle and need to get the flanking cabinets made. But before that I have to make another mantle, that will be surrounded by flanking cabinets too.

This mantle is simple and will likely be started, milled and finished in 2 days.

First I made up the eCab drawing
http://fototime.com/EE5700A8144965C/standard.jpg

That got approved and I moved onto making the details for the mantle. I actually designed it in my CAD program and then transferred it into eCabs.

Then I milled up the Cherry and sized it according to the eCab drawing, everything is pocket screwed.

I got as far as making the fluted pilasters today. To many visitors, lost a few hours.

Finished up the mantle yesterday. Everything but the plywood Cherry panels. I picked up a bunch of 3/4" and 1/2" Cherry plywood today and picked out a nice pc.

So I put the mantle in the spray room yesterday and sprayed sanding sealer on it. Today I sized the panels, pocket screwed the back, sanded them and sprayed the back and fronts with the sanding sealer.

Today I sanded the sealer and put two top coats on both the mantle and the panels. Third coat will go on tomorrow after I scuff sand the panels and the mantle then put the panels into the mantle.

Wow Leo that look great. How do you make your flutes buddy? Can you do a tutorial on that for me? IN a sep thread? Love your work man. Wish I had half your talent!

Looks nice Leo. Your drawing looks like you're gonna put in flat panels, is that right? Is it going in a Craftsman style house?

Leo G

Yep, shaker style panels. I just put a frame together and route out the back, square out the corners and cut pocket screw holes in the back of the plywood panels. That way I can finish them separately and not have that inside corner to deal with. After I get two coats on I will put in the panels (after scuffing) and do the final coat. Makes things easier.

The only thing left is the pc of crown under the mantle. It is finished and won't be
put on until it is screwed to the wall. The area behind the crown
will be used to screw it to the wall and then covered.

It is in its new home. Just attached with 2 screws at this point. The electrician needs to wire up the area for the widescreen tv. Cell phone pic....boooooo

Gear head?

I see it as two different hobbies. One is the pictures, one is the camera appreciation.

If your images suck with cell phone camera, they'll suck with the big expensive camera too. Just more pixels, that's all.

There's a line of thought that "I'm only one more piece of equipment away from being a good photographer," which is similar to "I'd be a great photographer if I had better equipment." Carpenters can fall prey to this as well ("I'd do better work with Festools / a nice shop") For carpenters, the real answer is simply "learn to build", and for photographers it's "learn to take pictures."

I had neither my shop camera or my DSLR with me. In order for the mantle to exist I need a picture. So there you have it, it exists.

And for you to say the equipment doesn't matter in photography is really not true.

If you have good equipment and get better then it doesn't matter much. But going from a point and shoot to a DSLR makes all the difference in the world, unless you are an idiot with shaky hands :laugh3:

I will be going back to the 2nd mantle/cabinet job tomorrow. I just finished up spraying everything today and I did the assembly of the backs and put the doors on. The shelves were raw this morning and I finished them while doing the assembly part of the cabinets. A lot more spraying than assembling. 3 coats each side on 12 shelves. Sprayed some crown, made and sprayed some baseboard along with 2 crown standoffs.

First time using Blum soft close hinges, neat hardware. I had to turn one of them off on each door, a little to soft close. Wish I had some standard self close hinges to replace them with, the soft close are pricy.

The pics were taken under that wonderful sodium lighting that I have.

Leo, have you tried the standard blum hinge with the soft close bracket that you attach?

Leo G
June 15th, 2011, 06:18 AM
I don't use blum. Thes were speced out so I had to use them.

WHy would you use a separate pc when you can have the action right on the hinge?

OK, long azz day. Had a pain in the butt trip down to Cheshire. A cabinet door opened up as soon as I got up to highway speed. So I pulled over and taped it up. 4 miles later the tape started coming off, did it again. This happened 4 times before I finally changed over completely to green tape and got enough on there to make the tape stay. Cost me an hour of time.

Got there around 11, was hoping for 9:30.

Nice thing, when I came into the house the whole room was cleared out. No furniture, no nothing - empty room.

Really tough install. Had to put cabinets around a 60" mantle with perfect reveals. Got'r done.

The problem Leo is all the before pictures. It would be like watching a women give birth. No sane guy would put himself through that.

The final picture after you photoshopped it is ok.

Do you haul these things in the back of an open truck that you need to tape doors shut?

Looks great as usual Leo.

Leo G
June 16th, 2011, 03:54 PM
Yes, back of my truck. If I had used the green tape the first time around I probably would only have had to stop once. The blue tape doesn't do well on a fresh finish, the green works pretty good.

I think you guys have become use to the niceness of my work, I guess I have to find some more Guinea pigs to view my work :laugh3:

What was that , about a 3 hour install?

Leo G
June 16th, 2011, 04:03 PM
Ya you're as bad as the HO. About 10 hours to get it in and get cleaned up. Floor to ceiling and wall to wall with no moldings between the cabinets and the mantle. Perfect fit and perfect scribes required. Had to do a lot of holes for outlets and access. After and hour of use being there the HO asked if we had about 45 minutes left. All I did was snicker and tell him to expect to see us for the rest of the day.

Looks good. You would have thought they would have centered that POS firebox. "I think I got it off a little to the right boss." How much you reckon you off?" "Oh its less than 2 feet easy." "Oh hell thats not bad at all, Go with it Larry, lets just get this done."

It was centered on the exterior.

Leo G

Have no idea if it is centered on the exterior or not. It is what it is. It's a modular home.

Looks good though . I didn't even see it until it was posted.

Typically when I see an interior item off center it is because they have centered on an exterior.
