Why Is Green Building Suddenly Such a Big Deal?

There are a lot of reasons why green building is suddenly a big deal

Sustainable building isn’t exactly a new phenomenon, but it has certainly taken root in a way that earlier efforts to change residential construction did not. Chalk it up to the coalescence of many things.

Energy costs are one key. The frenzy in passive solar design that began with the energy crunch of the 1970s fizzled when fuel prices declined. We lost a powerful incentive to build more-efficient houses that were cheaper to heat and cool. Building energy efficient houses was pushed to a side rail and forgotten. But now that energy prices have gone back up, we have a much better understanding of how tenuous our foreign supplies of fossil fuels have become.

Global climate change is another factor. Melting glaciers, disappearing Arctic ice, droughts and fierce storms—we’ve all read about them, and many of us have experienced them firsthand. Researchers attribute at least some of these phenomena to a gradual increase in greenhouse gases, which is causing the planet to warm up. Houses are part of the climate-change equation because they consume a great deal of energy. So when scientists talk about our “carbon footprint,” we now have a direct correlation between what we do and the world around us.

We know more about how houses work than we used to. Building scientists who study the mechanics of why houses behave the way they do have helped promote designs that are more durable, more comfortable and healthier than conventional houses. This increased technical prowess has made it possible to apply sensible building practices to all kinds of architectural styles.

Finally, the time was right for a shift in thinking. Just as Sarah Susanka struck a nerve with her “Not So Big” approach to residential design, proponents of sustainable building have made their case at just the right time. Homebuyers are apparently ready for a change, and the building industry is ready to follow. The fact that green-built houses last longer, have fewer problems, are cheaper to live in and keep their owners more comfortable—well, that doesn’t hurt.

Look, I was hugging trees in the 70's ... nobody gave a F' when the man came clubbing us over the noodle ... now we have a Solar output increase due to the alignment of our sun in it's "Long cycle" position within our system from 1992 -2012 (communications satellites & other planet temp increases as proof) and a movie by Al Gore (who's making a killing by the way) and suddenly you got school kids worried about polar bears!

You have another 100 tax hikes coming your way thanks to this whole 'movement' and instead of fighting it, we asked for it!

This whole 'movement' reminds me of another biological movement ... because it's full of Sh!T.

Remember how everyone stopped using paper bags 'cause we needed to save the trees?
So we all went to plastic like sheep, and what 15 years later we needed to go back to paper because plastic never decomposes ... now we don't get any bags when we buy groceries, we have to bring our own 're-usable' satchels or pay .25 cents per bag in some stores.

How much energy do you think it takes to make those 're usable' satchels!?!
you can make more than 1000 plastic bags for every one 're usable' satchel are you gonna use that thing 1000 times? or even 500 times if you figure doubling up on plastic?

No sir you just wait and see until the numbers come out working against this idea ... then see what hoop you'll jump through next. I don't know about you, but we never throw away our plastic grocery bags, we keep them in a drawer and use them for some thing else at least once.

I'll just wait until they get it right before I change my habits again.

Carpool lanes are another joke!

But it's ok to slow down all the big rigs and work trucks by 20% so that the little rice rockets can zip by at 60 mph.

If they REALLY wanted to help the pollution they should turn the last lane into a truckers lane for big rigs only! this way the big diesel pushers are not in traffic and we get our goods from a to b quicker and a reduction in pollution and shipping costs.

No to mention reducing the truck to passenger car accidents and an increase in efficiency in all remaining lanes.

But it's really about money, fines for the carpool lane are a very profitable business!

Fact is; the people who can carpool will carpool and those who can't wont ... Ever!
