Anyone on the board ever been asked to build half pipes, or full pipes?
I plan on making a mini in my backyard to blow off steam and have some fun. Just wondering if any of you have been contacted to professionally make ramps for events or private properties.
I know from experience, it is my roots to building. I know what works, what doesn't and the proper construction to build them. I am seriously thinking about making it a niche of mine.
Anyone?

LOL Leo it is like being on a trampoline :)
what do you guys suppose this cost to build?

those not in the "know" this is a ramp from the infamous "in search of animal chin" which is.. a legendary skate movie. This is what (besides being around my family of contractors) got me into building originally.
there is definitely a science to building ramps. And only a skater could build a ramp for skaters. It is just the flow and feel you need to get.. you don't just make the transitions out of 1/4'ers..
I think that is why I must become a nationally recognized builder of ramps.. think it would be ridiculously cool.
btw there are some legends in that video. Stacey Peralta, Lance Mountain, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, and others. :)

That one needs about 100 gallons of epoxy to coat everything and make it nice to land on.

Sling a 327 Chevy engine under that wheelchair and watch granny fly the pipe.

usually Masonite is put over the top of the osb or ply. They had to have used osb. If you use ply you have to SOAK it in water to get it to bend. It is a lengthy process. I am not sure though on lumber cost. It is like a small home. There were at least 3 truck loads on that mug. The one Tony Hawk has at his house has been around since the mid 80's and is a MONSTER.

Build ramps with skatelite, if you have ever been to woodward you know that stuff is so frickin smooth yet grippy. If you can afford it, its such a worthwhile investment.

my son asked me about a 1000 times to build him one. I've built him small launch ramps before...
had the urge to build a mini 1/2 pipe but never went through with it. dont really want my house to be the neighborhood hang out for all the kids, and thats what happened when I built him a freestanding tree house...
then they destroyed it
Animal Chin:) I remember those days

hahah build that kid a mini!... i used to want one so bad and I would dream of all these potential setups but my family constantly moved. I can understand your worry however, it will bring every kid (wanted or unwanted) to your yard!

yeah that skatelite stuff I got a quote, I actually have the samples right here. It is $75.00 for a 4X8 :surrender: that is buying it 50 sheets at a time :(

dang..... you would think they would offer it for the average consumer. I don't understand why that hemplite stuff is so expensive.

Ha well it was worth a try.. you could go pressure treated and do diagonal layering, then follow up with a little thompsons water seal?

From the title I thought you meant a handicap accessible ramp. I built a half pipe for myself when I was 16 yrs old. Had it half finished when I left with my parents for the weekend. When I came home the kids from the neighborhood had finished it. Needless to say it didn't turn out that well.
I got the layout from "thrasher" magazine. This mag is still around. I saw a copy the other day. Wow this brings back some memories! I remember I used Masonite for the decking. This was way back in.....oh around...1988. Geesh!

I was thinking about this and this thread on thursday. I still want to do this. I wonder if I would have to get a couple sets of plans okayed by the city, then possibly have others "custom" builds approved? Not really sure.
