Just received an invitation to bid on the repairs to this very old Catholic church steeple!
The top of the steeple is about 150 from the ground. We'll soon see if the guys I have are afraid of heights!:laugh3:
The bids are due in late Sept. wish me luck:grin:

Some of the ceder shingles have come off and the ridge caps are missing in a few places. The shingles were nailed in an upwards angle and they used galvanized nails. The entire surface will need to be re-nailed w/ Stainless steel nails.
Repairs are needed on some of the cornices and bird screens need to be placed over the louvers. After the repairs are completed it all gets painted. Also, some re-pointing of the stone needs to get done.

If I'm up that high, I want to be in an aircraft with a waist lanyard cinched up real tight.

I don't want anything to do with it. Nope. My first construction job was 220' slip form coal silos. But that was then.

What kind of competition do you have on this job, Jason? Steeple People? Locals?

Yes, we have 1 Steeple company and 1 other GC that is interested in this job. Both are local businesses.
The Steeple company worked on this about 10 years ago so he definitely has the advantage and the experience. I'll give it a shot anyway.

Off to the pre-bid meeting this morning. They've added on restoration work to the lower windows and doors now.
You know where I'll be working...

Went very well today. Surprisingly, there was only 6 interested bidders at the meeting. Lately, it seems there are about 10 to 12 on a job this size. I think the steeple is holding back a few "would be" bidders on this one.
I've got to contact my insurance company tomorrow and get the low down on costs for this work. I'm sure it ain't cheep!
4 of the 6 bidders left the meeting as early as they could while me and another restoration company stuck around and went up the inside of the steeple. The access ladder was built in 1879 and is only about 14" wide. Thankfully the inside was divided into sections. They had a floor w/ a hatch every 40' or so. I don't think I would have gone up if I had to look down a full 160' clinging on to an old ladder like that!:laugh3:

I wish I had pictures of the one steeple I did on the south side of Syracuse, Jason.
Last I knew the comp rate in NY was almost one for one!

Heights. I don't like heights. Unless I've got a good aircraft strapped under my ass, I'm not going.
About a month ago I was working a job that kept me on a high scaff for a week. I actually had nightmares about that one.
But we got 'er done.

there is a church around here with an almost 200 year old steeple that needed major repairs. They cut it loose craned it down fixed it and craned it back in place. It wasn't nearly as big or high as yours though

Now you're talking. Nice and safe on the ground.
Hey, I wonder if we could move remodel houses to our back yards so we could work at home.
Finish 'em up nice, and then move them back.

I like working at home. :laugh3::laugh3:
Of course, my back yard is the size of a postage stamp, so unless I'm building doll houses, I'm screwed.
