You may remember I finished the siding on this place last year.

The small roof where my ladder is had no step flashing used, only a long piece of L flashing, on top of the shingles, and a bunch of tar. I told the HO the siding would need to come off and proper flashing installed. He balked, added more tar.

Fast forward to this year and I get a call that water is getting into the stairway under the roof. Surprise.

The same contractor that did the siding also built the little retaining wall garden thing and backfilled it against the old, bare 1x sheathing.

I told him that the step flashing still needs to be done properly, and I convinced him that gutters are absolutely necessary to keep water away from the badly deteriorated foundation.
