Did we really vote for the Best Construction Blog?
Rick Pratt believes this blog from Wolfworks Designers/Builders in Colorado, not nominated for the Best Construction Blog competition, is a much better example of excllence than the other entries and finalists. Do you agree?
Yesterday evening, I received this blunt and provocative email from Rick Pratt in Colorado. He gave me permission to publish it.
I commented on the website contest you had and I just cannot keep myself from remaining silent on this one as well. I like your e-magazine. I like these emails and think you are an asset to our community.
However, once again I am dismayed with the results of this “contest.” What are those of us wanting to learn about blogging (or website development, the last contest) suppose to learn here. The winner of this Best Blog is barely average. Not really worthy of nomination let alone to be the winner. Usually these sort of marketing contests have the benefit of teaching us subscribers about “better blogging” or “wonderful websites.” Instead this information is now going to encourage people to create average to poor quality blogs because they think they have seen a “winner.”
lets kick his ass. wait here...... I'll go get Tulsa and a 12 pack.
LOL there was nothing negative said about RC..
The point he was making was that he thought the winning blog was not up to snuff. He thought there were better blogs out there..
While that might be the case, the winning blog was one that was nominated. The one he referenced was not..
If a nominated blog had members coming out and vote for it, that says to me that the readers of that blog think that it is a good one, hence the votes..
He was talking about the blog portion, not the forum portion of the contest. (RC was not allowed on the blog portion, but that's another thread) Personally, while the top ones might not be the best blog in the authors opinion, they are the best at getting people to respond, which makes them better than the rest (yes even better than mine)
While pretty pictures are nice, does that make a blog the best? While a blog may post daily as compared to the ones that may only update the content weekly or monthly, does that make them less worthwhile or is it the content? Personally the guy is full of sour grapes & should really just learn to accept defeat gracefully.
I am really surprised at the results of the forum portion though - we had around a 10% response rate (votes to members), while most of the others with 10000+ members could not get past .05% that voted for them.
Those members on MRW are the most fanatical group I have ever seen in a forum. I was shocked that it didn't win by a landslide.....but not enough to write an article about it.

If you take the Chicago voting methods out of the equation, the response rate might not be quite as impressive as you may think. But I like to think that RC had such a good response rate because Rory, Paul, and Len haven done such a great job of making this place feel like it belongs to us... even though I haven't gotten any of those crayon written stock certificates yet.
Of the forum sites I visit this is the most collegial of them all.
Yes there are a core of people who know each other from here and other places and will goof around with each other, it is in the sprirt of fun and comradeship. There isn't a question I would be afraid to ask for fear of being ridiculed or flamed. That IMHO is what sets RC apart from the other forums.
